Bio and Links
Bio Photo There are approximately 190 burial sites in Highland County. Robert & Emma Matheny documented many of those in their book Vital Records of Highland County, Va. As of July 2014 I've visited 127, concentrating on the small family cemeteries. Sometimes the Matheny's left out directions or listed land marks or land owners that are no longer around. Making the task of finding all the cemeteries a challenge.

I use a variety of sources to supply information for the graves I list. I attempt to add more than just dates and places. References that I use are Vital Records of Highland County Virginia by the Mathneys (They traipsed all over Highland from the late 1950's - 1983 transcribing many of the headstones in the county) Highland County Death Records 1853-1898 by Clay Hamilton. Pendleton County WV Grave Register. Other sources include 1910 Mortons History of Highland County & 1911 History of Pendleton County. Various family histories. Early issues of The Highland Recorder. Over the years I have complied information on graves (some unmarked) from the elder residents of Highland & Pendleton.

By November 2011 I had placed 1,000 names into the system, that seemed a lot at the time. As I had only intended to work on Surnames related to my family tree. Since then I hit 3,000 in October 2013. March 2014 4,000. As of July 2014 I surpassed 5,000 names.

Thanks so much for taking pictures of this cemetery! I have the listing of graves in this cemetery from the Bath Co. Historical Society, but I could never locate the cemetery.

Thank you so much for the photos of the graves of the Heveners! I am directly descended from them on my paternal grandmother's side.

If it was not for you, I probably never would have been able to see what their graves look like, since I live so far away.

Thanks again,

Jane Gum
This is the Jane Gum that was Isaac W Gum's wife. I was wondering about your 1809 birth date for her. On the 1870 census it says she is a year older than Isaac who was born in 1817. On the 1850 census where she is married to Cornelius H Gum, she is 35 which would make her born somewhere around 1815 or 1816. What do you think?
