Bio and Links
Bio Photo If you know of any one memorialized here who served aboard the USS Melvin DD-680 in the Pacific Theatre during WW II, please let me know.

I'm a transplanted New Englander. My parents are Paul Oscar Avery(1921-2003) and Betty Wheaton Avery(1925-1992). My mom's and aunt's interest in family history was passed to me. I have been doing family history research for over 25 years, most of which has been in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Maine.

I am retired, and live in The Villages, Florida, and would be happy to find and photograph cemetery stones of your friends or family in the Sumter - Lake - Marion County area.

If you find some pictures or monuments I haven't included, I'd love to hear from you when you post them. And corrections or additions to my postings are welcome. All suggestions are responded to within 48 hours unless I am out of town. If you supply me with additional information, I will always research and double check it before posting it to a memorial. There is simply too much inaccurate information out there.

I have completed projects on all cemeteries in Hawley, Buckland, Colrain, and Charlemont, Massachusetts. And another in Sears Cemetery in Barnstable County. Current projects include the Jenks Family in Rhode Island, the Groton Avery Family, and Shelburne, Franklin Co, Mass cemeteries. If any of my entries connects to your ancestors, let me know.

Memorials I have added in the last 7 days.
Memorials I have added in the last 30 days.
If I have not added any memorials in the last 30 days, I am very likely dead... contact Find A Grave.

Please use the EDIT button on the memorial to initiate correspondence and recommend updates. I am no longer able to respond to emails that do not provide quick and easy access to the memorial in question. Also, if your e-mail is not provided on your profile page, I won't be able to respond to you if a response is needed. The public messages are not appropriate for back and forth discussion. And, if you have no email, I will not process edits until you provide source data.

There are so many "orphan" memorials here on Find-A-Grave, many of which have been posted en masse and then forgotten. So many need identification and linking so we know who they were! After posting a memorial, please take the time to research, identify, and link the memorial properly..... it will go along way toward further establishing the credibility of this site.

Regarding transfers outside guidelines..... I will consider transfer to those who have a proven track record of collaboration on FindAGrave.

RE: Job and Mary Drake
I am glad that I was able to help. If this request had gone unanswered another year or two you would have gotten a response telling you the stone was unreadable or reduced to dust. The porous stone they used and the New England weather is destroying them at an alarming rate. I expect that the bottom of the marker will crumble and fall off very shortly.

You're very welcome.

This is a collateral line for me, so I don't have a lot of information, but thought I would pass along the little I do have. Glad you found it useful.

I see there is quite a list of request there. Life is busy but good on my end and hope the same for you.

RE: William H Avery

The plot thickens!

You're right, the time period use of the name William Henry Harrison (after our 9th president 1773-1841) definitely doesn't fit for your William.

The middle initial on grandfather's death certificate is listed as "A". Arrgghh; errors abound even on official documents!

When I originally contacted the caretaker (years ago), she sent me copies of the cemetery lot deed for my great-grandmother. Her husband appeared as the purchaser. There were a few other genealogical gems as well. If I remember correctly, the only cost was to photocopy the pages.

Maybe that would shed some light on the mystery of William's middle names?

RE: William H Avery
Hi Kevin,

My husband and I recently visited the cemetery for the first time (my great-grandparents are buried there).

While we were there the caretaker allowed me to photograph a few pages from her burial book. The two middles names were listed in the book with William's section and lot numbers, presumably added when the grave site was purchased.

You've piqued my curiosity now too. I wonder who purchased the plot and how they knew information you've not seen elsewhere?

The caretaker was very nice and super helpful. I'd be happy to share her contact info off line if you're interested.

Patterson Family and related ansectors
Hi Kevin, I just wanted to thank you for all your awesome work documenting the cemeteries in and around the Colrain, Massachusetts area. You have documented, researched and posted a huge portion of my family history on Find A Grave. I have just begun to scratch to surface on your work and have visited numerous pages of my ancestors you have created. Great work and thanks again, James Robinson

RE: Martha Whipple Link Request
BVHS group Postle/River Road (are you still a member there?) is working with RIHCC to get the situation rectified. The "Lost" cemetery entries were added as is from the database only and not any on-site work. The actual burials and stones were found this week and also some in 2015 by an independent graver at CU026. GPS location is shown on the actual finds.
