P.P.S. on Smith :)

If you scroll down to the Smith burials, you can see what I'm talking about. Look at the location relationships between Samuel, Freddie, & the unknown person.

Yep, in looking at the pages that you manage, I can see the relationship. I'll bet anything that that's her buried right there by Samuel & Freddie. Unfortunately, no way of ever knowing for sure, though.

Johnson Grove Cemetery photo request
Hi! I typed out a reply to your photo request that you should have received. Then I thought to check the cemetery records for "unknowns" because sometimes they're listed if it's been found that another body has been buried there but was undocumented.

What I sent you explains how the cemetery worked back in those days.

There is a Samuel S. Smith who died 12/14/1896 & is buried in O, 34, 10. There is a Freddie Smith who died 12/12/1884 & is buried in O, 34, 08.

There is ALSO an "unknown" body buried in O, 34, 09. There's no documentation at all on who this person was.

That means that this "unknown" body is very likely either a relative of Samuel & Freddie or was a very close friend of the family & the family allowed them to be buried there.

Is the person you're looking for related to Samuel and/or Freddie?

Samuel S. Smith and Margaret
Hello! I am related to this line through their daughter Mary S. Vanness born in Dekalb, Illinois who married Lewis Vanness and moved to Allegan County, Michigan. I stumbled across a Rootsweb post you made in 2002 about recieving Samuel's Civil War Pension File. I was hoping you could share some of that with me if possible. Thanks so much!

Margaret Smith
I requested a photo of your memorial and received the following response: "We are writing to let you know that a Find A Grave volunteer has reported a problem with your photo request for Margaret Smith.

The general problem they reported is:
Cemetery office has no record of this person

They also reported, specifically:
The cemetery listings of persons buried in Johnson Grove Cemetery on the DeKalb website did not list this person as being buried there, but I walked the entire cemetery anyway and could not locate a gravesite for this person. If Margaret Smith is buried here there are no records, no gravestone or gravestone is eligible."
