RE: Ward & Crouch Memorials
I am a Ward descendent and have my great, great grandparents (William and Amanda Ward) as well as my great grandparents (Herbert and Melissa Ward) buried there. We have other family members there so I have made quite a few visits to the Ward Cemetery.

Most of the Wards are buried near the middle of the cemetery. These appear to be some of the oldest markers. Then at the south end is another clump of old markers. These are primarily the Swishers.

Scattered between the Wards and the Swishers are several graves marked with just a simple concrete block. These blocks aren't cut stone, but rather rough aggregate concrete, rectangular and all about the same size and laying flat. It is unlikely that they date back to the late 1800's but could have been placed later to mark damaged graves or graves with wooden markers. There are also several low or depressed areas that could be potential graves.

I'm sorry but I didn't think to call the caretaker's number or check with the local church to see if anyone had old maps or records of the cemetery. I have general photos of the cemetery that I would be more than happy to share if you are interested.

Hi Ron!

NOPE it is not a California thing. I actually went searching for an answer myself and found an article on the Legal Genealogist Blog ( However, if you are able to get the plot information. I can go over and try and get the picture. So strange, I have never been turned away before this one!

RE: Porter Berlin Gravestone
If you have an Obit stating Porter is in Poplar Grove, then it is correct. Then he just does not have a stone, and may be buried elsewhere than the family plot. The next time I get to the library I will check on that.
