Bio and Links
Bio Photo The attached photo is from 411 N. Wilmington St. Raleigh NC, my mother's childhood home. A home which no longer exists along with many others in the surrounding area between Peace College and the State Capitol.

I have a interest in Wake Co genealogy researching primarily family connections here for the last 5 years. My surnames include Carver, Gill, John Davis d Aug 1829, Dunn, High, Horn, Moring, and Taylor(Nash Co) maternal line.

Surnames in Rockingham and Caswell Co include Alcorn AKA Alcon,Betts,Fitzgerald,Mills,Nunnally,Powell,Robertson,Stubblefield paternal line and so many more families with ties to these counties and beyond.

A resident of Somerset Co, NJ for 28 years.

I've posted many photos from the NC yearbook collection which are available on at line at ncgenweb.us/nc/bookshelf/yearbooks/ The vast majority of photos I have used are from 1930 and earlier yearbooks. After contacting several schools over the use of these photos and copyright law, I have been told as long as I'm not profiting from them and have listed the source, I'm in compliance with the law under the guideline of fair use. As of early 2012 and ancestry including yearbooks on their website, the issue of photos and copyright issues would appear to be a mute point. If a family member wishes me to remove any photo I have posted, just let me know.

Most memorials I have added are to Oakwood & Montlawn. Genealogy is my first love. I enjoy finding the elusive badly transcribed records that help document a family. I think the 1940 Wake census on ancestry may be the worst yet. As of April 2015, I can identify 5200+ individuals in my extended tree that are buried at Oakwood, 3300+ at Montlawn with a total database of 80,300+. Any memorial I add will based on a combination of death, census and Oakwood records. The memorial's and photo's I add are done so with much respect to that individual, their family and the history of North Carolina. I try to link memorials or add other details that may be useful to someone's research. The majority of the memorials will be part of my Wake County "Six Degrees of Separation" Tree. Visits to Oakwood in Aug 2012 & Aug 2013 to take photos.

My findagrave wish list would be a paper scroll symbol to signify there is a paper document which would leave the portrait symbol for actual pictures of people.

I do like to link and if I have not, it is just an oversight on my part. Thanks to all that help with my suggestions/requests and the new edit feature which makes that so much easier now.

My memorials are frequently revisited and updated especially since finding additional records at familysearch.org which ancestry does not have. These records are available to all researchers. Their records include death certificates 1931-1994 and a marriage collection thru 1979. May I respectfully suggest, anyone posting current deaths without a birthdate revisit your memorials and get the birthdate from the social security index which is also available on familysearch.org.

PLEASE refrain from death certficates on my memorials. It should not be necessary in most cases.

It has recently come to my attention the GPS location for individuals buried at Oakwood can be found in the recently updated database. Find your individual within the official Oakwood database and then click on Map. If you're requesting a photo for any of my memorial's at Oakwood let me know and I will update the location.

If you add an obituary clipping to any of my memorial's, please let me know. It may contain information I do not have.

Mar 2015-Ok,I've been on here almost 6 years and I just found out if you scroll all the way down in titles you will see "MD" which can be used if the deceased was a medical doctor.

Mar 2015-I'm now using News Bank to further my research. They have obituaries from the News & Observer starting @ 1991. I have been able to access this online thru my library. Other NC papers are also available.

Charles Hinnant
While fulfilling the photo requests for Historic Oakwood, I also noticed a headstone for Charles T. Hinnant, Jr (1910-1920). I did not notice it online, but I took a photo of the headstone in case you need it since it was beside Charles T. Hinnant (1881-1912).

Benjamin Smith Skinner (1849-1923)
Hello,

I requested a photo of his headstone (Oakwood Cemetery, memorial # 104742927) and this is what the volunteer reported:
"I searched for all Skinners in the cemetery database, here: http://historicoakwoodcemetery.org/search-burial-records.asp, and did not find a Benjamin Skinner. Do you have any other information that could help?"

Can you help please?

Karen

RE: Nancy Norwood Hunter
Thanks for checking on Nancy Norwood Hunter. Yes, my line does go back to the Highs through Delaney High and I can't think of her father's name off the top of my head. Very helpful and thanks again. Carroll

Benjamin Finch
I am looking at the Maplewood Cemetery survey done by the Wilson County Genealogical Society, copyright 1998. The entry reads:
Finch, Benjamin P. d. 25 Sep 1903

The headstone says:
Benjamin P. Finch
Died Sept 25, 1903

When I took the headstone photo, I also photographed the headstones of others in this plot. (Actually I am surveying the entire cemetery row by row.)
The people who are buried in the same plot as Benjamin are:
Gray Finch 1901-1965
Maggie C. Finch 1901-1992
John E. Finch 1875-1906 (brother of Benjamin)
Mary Margaret Finch 1921-2004
Lula Finch Lamm 1898-1979 (daughter of Benjamin)

I hope this is helpful.

Deborah

Benjamin Finch
Hi, thanks for your note about Benjamin Finch buried in Maplewood Cemetery in Wilson. I am traveling on business so I do not have access to my sources here. I agree the headstone is very hard to read in the photo. As I recall it is not much better in person. When I run across these illegible headstones I refer back to the survey of Maplewood cemetery that was done around 1998 by the Wilson county genealogical society, I have a printed copy of this document. As you can imagine, a lot of acid rain has fallen in the last 20 years and other types of weather have also done damage, but apparently many stones were much easier to read 20 Years ago, so the survey often shows dates that are now difficult to make out. That may have been the case with this headstone but as I said I am on the road so I cannot say for sure. When I get home I will look this up and get back to you with more information.
