Mary A. Foster photo - thank you
Richard,

Thank you very much for such a swift response to my photo request for Mary A. Foster. From what you posted, it looks like Mary Foster is buried without a headstone.

I think this is strong evidence that this is Mary A. Burgess b. Abt. 1825 Pittsburgh - d. Feb. 9, 1908 in Mercer, PA (her death certificate says she was to be buried in Pittsburgh).

Thus she is in all likelihood the wife of Henry Baldwin Foster 1816-1870, the brother of the composer Stephen C. Foster.

Mary A. Burgess's parents were John H. Burgess, a prominent Pittsburgh merchant who died in 1828, and his wife Mary Ekin Ledlie b. 1801 Ireland - d. 1881 Pittsburgh (she is buried at Allegheny). The Ledlies and the Moody family history is documented in a book entitled:

Title: Joseph Ledlie and William Moody, early Pittsburgh residents: their background and some of their descendants
Author: Laughlin, Ledlie Irwin.
Collection: Historic Pittsburgh Text Collection

Thanks so much for you help.

Thanks for locating the gravesite. I guess there's nothing to be learned there.

Thank you so much for taking & posting the photo of Sarah's gravestone. It's cool to see how well it matches the one of her husband. I appreciate your kindness in granting my request. - Janet
