This is the father of Florence Smithhart Alexandeer who I just had transferred to me. I notice there are 2 listing for him on findagrave, but this one has the correct headstone and spelling of the last name.

Earl, I just wanted to say thank you for posting Lisa's gravesite to Find-a-Grave. I didn't know you did this, but I know those you've posted are really happy to see their family graves. Thank you again, and keep doing good. I didn't know you were into genealogy. Good luck..

Thank you Earl for transferring Van's memorial. Without your posting Van's memorial, I would be still looking for him. Thank you for all of your work and dedication to Find-A-Grave.
|Thomas Scott||Edward Van Martin|
Edward Van Martin (engineer), Lain Langford (brakeman) and Ernest Scott (fireman) were employed by the Gulf & Ship Island Railroad Company. Early on Christmas morning around 2:30 am, a cold and wet rainy night in 1926, these men lost their lives due to a railroad trestle washout, two miles south of Silver Creek, Mississippi. The engine and coal tender folded together like a pocket knife as the trestle collapsed around them. My grandfather’s brother, Ernest, was firing for Van Martin the engineer that fateful day. Lain, the brakeman, was riding in the engine’s cab, along with Van and Ernest. Ernest, on Van’s and other employee recommendations, had just recently been hired and had volunteered to work for another fireman that had asked to be off on Christmas day.
I have been researching this accident for several years and have recently found Edward “Van” Martin and Lain Langford’s memorials, thanks to Find-A-Grave. I would be honored to have Van’s memorial in my care. The wives of the men stayed in touch for several years after the accident. They remained in everyone’s prayers and thoughts, especially on Christmas day for many years. Van had a four year old daughter and she is now 94. It is my understanding that there are no Martin close relatives still living. Ernest, also married, had four children, the youngest being only two years old. Lain was married and had a very young child as well.
