Hello,

I help my husband with teaching history classes out here in the Black Hills. I also love genealogy. One class he teaches is on the history of Fort Meade in Sturgis, SD. Recently while conducting research at the Old Fort Meade Cemetery in Sturgis, South Dakota, I noticed several people have listed family members or friends at the cemetery who passed after 1943. The Fort Meade Cemetery has been a closed cemetery since 1943. No internments can take place nor have taken place since Black Hills National Cemetery opened with the first burials in 1948.

Be sure to check with the “Black Hills National Cemetery” (a few miles away from Fort Meade Cemetery) and your relative or friend may be buried there or possibly at one of the other cemeteries in Sturgis: Bear Butte Cemetery or St. Aloysius Cemetery.

Another possibility is they could be buried in the similarly named “Fort Meade Post Cemetery” located in Maryland

Good Luck in your searches.

William,
Thanks for that info, very interesting. Now that I'm retired that sounds like a great destination for one of my Spargo history expeditions. Also the upgraded grave photos would be nice when you really have nothing better to do.

William,

Thanks tremendously for the kind effort in getting these five markers. A good addition to those memorials and my growing collection of Spargos. Much appreciated.

RE: Cushman's
They're all yours. Great family and I love the pictures. Illinois reminds me of an art teacher I had in high school! It's scary! (the older picture of her). Thanks for your service too brother.

Cushman's
Hi William
I see you sponsored and are related to a couple of the Cushman's I did memorials for and I like the pictures you've added. If you'd like I can transfer mine to you and you can update them as if they were yours as far as editing etc. Let me know. It's a very interesting family and you should be proud!
