Yep, might as well just leave him a Captain. It's written right there on his gravestone. I hadn't noticed that his bio called him a colonel a couple times, so thanks for telling me and for looking up his Confederate file to verify his highest rank.

I got your edit about Mallery's title. Since his obituary and his gravestone called him a Captain, could you tell me why you think it should be Colonel?

Thanks for updating her memorial.

The 1910 Fed Census for William C Smith and Mollie (Webb) shows that Mollie had 2 children with one still living. In the same census, Maggie is listed as 8 years old, born in 1902 and again in the 1920 census at 18. I doubt the deceased child in this memorial was named Maggie also. The other children in the census reports all line up so I am sure this is the right family.

Hi Meredith! You have certainly done a lot of work on the Lewis family. Do you know if, and how Marah "Major" Lewis is related to another Lewis who is interred in the same Lewis Family Cemetery? Namely, Rachel Margret Lewis born about 1880. I would like to connect her to parents, if possible, or mention family members. Information about the early of Gibson is interesting but not well documented. Thank you in advance, Anneg

Just wanted to let you know why I declined to add Jr. for Augustus: It isn't on his tombstone, nor on any records I've found. Even though his name is the same as his father's, the designation of Sr. / Jr. can change as generations change and isn't always part of the legal name. If you have other data that suggests otherwise in this case, please feel free to let me know. Thanks.

I will be delighted to add the portrait of Elizabeth Alston and her mother to Elizabeth's Memorial Page. It was contributed by a descendant, Cotten Alston.
Are you related to the A. H. Alston family?
If so , I would like to correspond with you.
Warm regards, Eugenia

I wonder if this person is in your tree and if you research his family? I have information about his birth mother if he was born in 1842 instead of 1850. She died probably in childbirth but her father named Wm H and his father John G Hortman in his 1844 will. He was Zachariah Holleman and his daughter was Elizabeth Holleman Hortman. Are you interested or is this not your Wm H Hortman? Thank you, Denise
