There are approximately 203 burial sites in Highland County, Virginia (excluding duplicates & other anomalies). Four of those the current landowners are refusing access to the graves. Robert & Emma Matheny documented many of the 201 cemeteries in their 1986 book Vital Records of Highland County, Va. As of July 2016, I have visited 175, concentrating on the small family cemeteries. Sometimes the Matheny's left out directions or listed land marks or land owners that are no longer relevant. Making the task of finding all the cemeteries a challenge. Many of the family burying grounds are in remote mountain areas requiring a hike to reach them. Many have been abandoned & it takes some time to clear away brush in order to take good photographs.
Documenting graveyards in Bath County, Virginia & Pendleton County, West Virginia, is ongoing.
I use a variety of sources to supply information for the graves I list. I attempt to add more than just dates and places. References that I use are Vital Records of Highland County Virginia by the Mathneys (They traipsed all over Highland from the late 1950's - 1983 transcribing many of the headstones in the county) Highland County Death Records 1853-1898 by Clay Hamilton. Pendleton County WV Grave Register. Other sources include 1910 Mortons History of Highland County & 1911 History of Pendleton County. Various family histories. Early issues of The Highland Recorder. Over the years I have complied information on graves (some unmarked) from the elder residents of Highland & Pendleton.
By November 2011 I had placed 1,000 names into the system, that seemed a lot at the time. As I had only intended to work on Surnames related to my family tree. Since then I hit 3,000 in October 2013. March 2014 4,000. As of July 2014 I surpassed 5,000 names.

Thanks for all that you do to find grave sites. My husband is a direct line to John A K Sitlington and I want to make a few corrections. His parents are Robert and Mary (Feamster) Sitlington, and they are from Bath Co, VA. I have seen his home that is still standing in Milboro Co and it can be found on the internet as the Old Stone house in Milboro Co, VA. He lived there most of his life and they had all their children there including John. Robert was in the Rev. War and provided extensive support to the field being back injured from both sides in his wagons which is documented in war records. Just want to correct this record from Find a Grave. If you are related would love to exchange records. Went to VA and saw house just last year, exciting.

Thank you so much for the photo of second My Great-Grandfather Pvt. Noah Lunsford's grave marker.
It brought a tear to my eye.
The photograph is beautiful and will be treasured always.

I sent you a correction for her name. I found her Certificate of Death and it states that her maiden name was her mother's maiden name of Jackson, not Davenport.

No problem Kent! Glad you have the cemetery :) I'll delete our memorial. Would you consider adding the following in the bio of yours? Really appreciate it.
- was the second wife of David Van Meter Ruckman and they had no children

I sent you a spouse edit for Elsie Jean. She was the first wife to Dr. Harold H. Gist. I wanted to make mention as he is already connected to his second wife. Thank you.

I am sure this is the same Sgt. Benson who took a letter from my great great grandfather Philip Pendleton Lewis back to my great great grandmother after the Civil War. I posted a typed copy of the letter on Philip Lewis's findagrave site. You may read it on the site or I will email it to you.
Sgt. Benson must have been a wonderful person. Philip Lewis died in prison at Rock Island, Illinois. But for Sgt. Benson's kindness, my family might never have known what happened.
