I am currently working on Woodlawn Cemetery in Independence, Missouri. The cemetery was founded in 1837 with the purchase of 1.25 acres adjacent to the Stayton Family Cemetery for the "interment of all Jackson County residents". In 1845 Joseph and Sally Hansbrough sold one and 6/25 acres of land for use as a grave yard for persons of Jackson County. The land was to be used for the purpose of public burials. This established the cemetery known for many years as the City Cemetery. The land south of the original cemetery was sold to Father Donnelly in 1853 adding six acres on the southern edge calling it Saint Mary Cemetery for the use of Catholic patrons. These three cemeteries were combined in 1922 to become Woodlawn Cemetery. The Woodland Cemetery now contains 56 acres, the final resting place for over 33,000 graves. Within its walls is the history of the Civil War and the Sante Fe Trail.|
I spent the summer getting the entire cemetery photographed and I am in the process of posting all to Find A Grave along with any information I can get. The records at Woodlawn start in 1897, but I started at 1910 for now because I can usually find some supporting documents to verify the entries in the book. Always willing to transfer memorials to their family. I also worked on Blue Springs cemetery the summer before. There are a lot of names that I am not posting at this time because I can't find any information on them other than they are listed in the records at Woodlawn. It only gives a name, age, race, gender and date of internment and most of the time a plot location.
At the present time I am mapping out the cemetery. I have documented Division 1, Sections 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 A, 14 B, Stayton Meadows Garden, New St. Mary's Cem., Sec. 21 and Division 2, Sections 1, 2 & 3. I am working on Old St. Mary's Cem., Sec 17 now.

There is a photo of headstone from Woodlawn Cemetery for Andrew J. Bradin. Was wondering if it is his, or his wife's. Looks like I see "wife of Andrew J. Bradin" at the top of the monument. From the picture I can't make out the writing above "wife of"...could be wife's name possibly?

Yes, that image was the first one taken and it was actually taken by a friend of mine who was with me. I do know to be on the lookout for shadows on the headstones... and I told my friend this, but the sun just would not allow the proper angle to take the photo without casting a darned shadow. Her plot is dead center and up front, so I may retake it when I go back next weekend (hopefully at a different time of day). I did not know the shadow was in it until I got back home... And the good memories are only just starting to outweigh the pain of those I have lost, but nothing will erase the nightmare of watching someone die as suddenly as my fiance' did... It does get easier as I gain acceptance, though. I'll jut never be quite the same.

Thanks for your note in reference Sally. Her burial has been a point of contention for some time with me. The death certificate does little to clarify, as 'Missouri' was first typed, and then 'Kansas' over that. I have been awaiting photo confirmation for one or the either since no other verification appears to be available. My only concern is the integrity of the location, because I really want to know! :)

I wanted to touch base with you about a listing for Charles Olaf "Charley" Olsen, memorial number 124277491. I believe this listing is an incorrect link in the Olsen family that I am descended from. Please take a look at my Charles Olsen listing, number 136619235. Charles Olaf was my great grandfather, son of Peter Martin Olsen and Hannah Lucinda Carr. I know for a fact that he is buried in Memorial Park Cemetery in Kansas City, Kansas. The death dates on your listing and mine aren't the same either. I'd be curious to see the photo you took of the headstone in Calvary cemetery. :)
If you have time to compare the listings and if you agree with me, can you adjust your listing? Maybe there is another Charles Olaf Olsen out there buried in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, but he isn't the son of Peter Olsen and Hannah Carr.

Thank you for archiving this information. Found this by online search of my mother who has been deceased for more than 30 years. Glad to know her location is searchable for future generations of family geneologists.
