Bio and Links
I have been a genealogist for the great majority of my life and am amazed by the power and richness of Find A Grave. It is an honor to contribute.

I manage Find A Grave accounts for several historical organizations. This account is reserved for my own blood relatives and their spouses, generally in North America. (Please see my European Ancestors account as well.) Some remarkable members created a number of these memorials and have graciously transferred them to my care. The contributors I have listed as "friends" have my special thanks for the their volunteer work and their many kindnesses. I am simply in awe of Wayne Irons, Scott Balyer, and Carol Foss in particular.

My Find-A-Grave Philosophy

We are put on this planet to give of ourselves, as we can, to the people around us and the strangers we meet. In the interest of accuracy and fostering appreciation of our ancestors, we should share information with our kin and the public as much as possible. If our ultimate purpose is not to disseminate what we have learned, then we are just navel-gazing.

Acts of genealogical kindness always come back in kind--one way or another. It might not be direct or immediate; but I have found this "pay it forward" principle to be true time and again as a researcher.

Graves and the memory of our ancestors are sacred things, and foremost the responsibility of family. We are commanded to honor our mothers and fathers. And it is a blessing for ourselves, as well, when we help others to do this.

I welcome contact about any of my families, and hope the information I have posted is of help to you. I don't post my personal email address publicly. If you want to contact me, please leave a public message or join Find A Grave and send a message through the edit function at one of my memorials. I will respond as promptly as I can. I am always glad to meet new cousins, or reconnect with old ones.

Why Do I Ask About Possible Transfer?

Every day I send out multiple edit requests and links in order to improve the data in Find A Grave. (I have submitted nearly 3,800 accepted edits since the automatic edit function was implemented in late 2013.) If I can add substantial information to a memorial, I sometimes inquire as to whether its creator would consider transferring (if he/she is not related, of course). The reason I do this is simple: I have dedicated much of my life to promoting scholarship in genealogy and the use of archival sources. If someone submits an edit or a link to a memorial that I manage, I analyze the information and research the documentation before accepting it. Hopefully, unrelated persons managing memorials I am interested in will do the same. However, I know this is not always the case and, as a result, I find that incorrect edits and links are sometimes accepted by members.

Please do not take offense by my inquiring. I am always glad to contribute to others' memorials as well. Most likely, though, I will not contribute biographical notes if the person who maintains the memorial is unrelated and therefore unlikely to retain the source data.

My Virtual Cemeteries, etc.

You will see that I have built over 130 virtual cemeteries under this account. I have nearly 100 others at my European Ancestors account. I hope you will check them out--especially if you are descended from one of my ancestral families. They represent a lot of time and effort.

Please do visit my virtual cemeteries for direct ancestors before requesting a transfer. If you are more closely related to one of my ancestral aunts, uncles or cousins and your request is within Find A Grave guidelines, I will be glad to transfer the memorial to you if you will explain your connection.

If your request is outside Find A Grave guidelines (i.e., the person is not your close relative), I will be glad to consider transfer if you will explain your connection in detail and let me know how you will build out the memorial. Again, the memorials attached to this account are my own blood relatives or their spouses, with only a few exceptions. Linking children or getting children linked to your (our) relative, and sponsoring the memorial, are good indicators that you are committed to improving the data and caring for the memorial.

If you are a direct descendant of any of my ancestors, I will gladly add a link to your profile from that memorial noting that you are also a descendant--just ask. (Or add a flowers note explaining your connection.)

RE: Mills Family
Hello!
My line is also from Mary Lanning Stout and Amanda and Joseph. I have photographs of all of them and William and Charles, son of Joseph and Amanda. I grew up in Ewing and now live in South Jersey. I was married in Ewing Pres. Church. I would love to compare notes!

John C. Iler
You are wrong in your assumption that John C. Iler is the son of Henry Iler. He is the son of Jacob and Lydia Iler. It's quite possible that they were not yet married when John was born. This was often the case in those days. His wife Ann W. Wilson died and was buried at Old Bethel Cemetery.
He went to Oregon in 1847 with his son, Savil Wilson Iler and his daughter, Mary. Jacob's father's name was John. Often the first born is named for the grandfather. His second son was Jacob.

John C. Iler is my 3rd Great Grandfather. I find what you've written on findagrave very confusing.

He was buried on Iler's Peak near Carver, Oregon, as was his daughter Mary, and her children who died in the flood.

Johnson Family Cemetery
A reading of the Johnson Family Cemetery can be found in The Genalogical Magazine of New Jersey - V47 #2 whole #176 - May 1972, page 49-52.

Thanks for all your efforts.

I saw that you left a "cousin" note to my great grandfather, William Mills. How are we related?

RE: Peter J. Ferris
Yes, Peter J. Ferris is my gg grandfather.
I am descended from his son, Jay Floyd Ferris.
Peter's mother was
Margaret Mary Becker # 86112873.

Regarding Mary Ferris, my records differ showing Mary Ferris daughter of Samuel Ferris and Mary Pardy/Purdee, married David Slawson/Slauson in 1763 Stamford, CT. She was his first wife. David is listed with the DAR.#A 105089

This would put her marriage at age 14? and the first child being born in 1764. Mary's birth is 1749/1750 and death 1784. Burial unknown.
These dates are a little off, so I am unsure of the original sources being accurate.

I will continue to search for records to clarify Mary's lineage and let you know what I find.

Hi Joe,
Eloise Ege is my G-grandmother. When you left flowers, you called her cousin! 😀 I was wondering how you are related??
Thanks, Karen

Gwyneth Black's parents
Hi again Joe: Since I transferred Mrs. Black's memorial to you, I won't be able to add her parents. I know you'll do that.

Take care.

Gwyneth Black's memorial
Hi Joe: Mrs. Black is not a relation to me. At the time I created her memorial, I was adding information to FindAGrave. I'm not doing that much any more except for my family.
You are amazing. You have been very active for being on F. A. G. for 4 years.
Anytime you want to transfer something to you or suggest additional information on a memorial I created, you're welcome to just e-mail me directly. Whatever way you do it is fine with me.

Take care.

Joan
