I contribute to this web site for several reasons. The first is to help those researching their family trees. Frequently they are geographically unable to visit a cemetery, and are grateful that someone has done the foot work for them. Another reason is that as time passes, these stones degrade, and may potentially be lost to the elements. This site is a way to preserve them. And finally, I feel that after we are gone, we should be more than names and dates on a stone. By creating memorials for people, they live on a little longer. I love to research people whenever possible to find out a little about them while they were alive. I look up census data, SSDI records and obituaries for as many records as I can. I try to link family members when I find them, and although that slows me down considerably, my main goal is accuracy, not volume. Nothing makes me happier than finding a maiden name! Believe it or not, women DID exist before they got married!
CORRECTIONS: My philosophy of this web site is that if you originate a record, it is your DUTY to make corrections that are provided to you, and I will ALWAYS make corrections to records that I start in a timely fashion. Never fear!
On that point, PLEASE INCLUDE SUPPORTING SOURCE DATA FOR CORRECTION REQUESTS. Although I love to link families together and add maiden names, etc., it is important that these additions be accurate! Just like our teachers taught us in math class ... SHOW YOUR WORK!!!
I am frustrated by people who have abandoned records, and wish F.A.G. would address the problem of records that are being held "hostage" by non-responsive record owners. The deceased, their ancestors, and especially their descendants deserve better.
TRANSFERS: I don't mean to sound harsh, but please don't ask me to transfer distant relations. F.A.G. policy states, "Simply having someone in your family tree is not grounds for a management transfer request." I worked hard for my records, and I care about them. I will promptly make any corrections or links that need to be made. I have seen too many people who ignore correction requests to ever become one of them. I make corrections as soon as I get them! Also (sad that I have to say this), any requests that are demanding in tone, or do not include the word "please" will be ignored.
PHOTOS: If you find one of my records without a photo, please contact me before submitting a photo request. Chances are very good that I have the photo, but am backlogged in getting them attached to records. I'd be happy to jump ahead if I know it will help someone! Also, please ask me before using my photos. I always say yes, but it is nice to be asked. It lets me know that my photos are doing some good!
