Bio and Links
Bio Photo Hello =)

My name is Shayna, I am 27 years old, and I am a San Diego native. I work for the County full time, but spend spare time with my grandparents, husband and pets (6 dogs & 2 cats), looking for graves, dabbling in photography, and squeezing in a social life when I can.

My heritage is mostly German, but I also have a little bit of English and Welsh. Direct names include Oxley, Croft, Love, Shaneyfelt/Shanyfelt, and Mehlkop/Mehlkopf. There are many many names beyond that.

I am fascinated by many aspects of death -- not in a weird morbid way, but in improving the death experience (not surrounded by beeping machines in a hospital), seeing alternatives in the local funeral industry (can we get a green burial space in San Diego?), empowering individuals to know what is and isn't law (you don't HAVE to embalm grandma), and encouraging discussion about all of the above. We're all going to die -- why not educate and empower ourselves to be extra specific in our advanced directives? While we're alive and well, let's get it done. And for the sake of future findagrave volunteers, can we all promise to arrange for the engraving of our death date on our marker/plaque/headstone? The number of times I've come across a marker with no death date because the person had no next-of-kin to make sure it was taken care of...

Now for my rants and tidbits...

Photos & Photo Requests
Yes, you may use the photo(s) I took.

This goes without saying, but because I recently witnessed another volunteer doing so, I must say -- Please, please do not use your shoe-clad foot to clear grass/debris from a marker. That marker is a representation of the person who rests there.. how disrespectful to wipe your dirty shoe on their marker! Kneel down to clear it off for goodness sake!

If you are a photo volunteer actively claiming requests, you click "OK" and agree to fulfill that request within 14 days of the day you claim it. If you can't do that, or don't want to do that, then don't claim photo requests. There are plenty of photo volunteers in the San Diego area that are willing to go out and get photos in a decent amount of time. I don't even know that "rude" really covers my feelings on the matter, but it is unacceptable to flip-flop someone's request around for over a month, leaving someone waiting, because you choose to disregard the 14-day timeframe set forth by findagrave.
Additionally, if photo requests are slowly coming through and a volunteer has Edward Smith claimed (for example), use common sense and give the same volunteer the opportunity to claim the accompanying Clara Smith -- chances are they're right next to each other and it makes no sense not only for two volunteers to trek out to the same place, but for two volunteers to inquire with the office about the same location. Findagrave photo volunteers know we aren't the cemetery workers' favorite clientele, so let's try to just keep everyone happy -- cemetery workers, other volunteers, the people requesting the photo(s)... okay?

Transferring Management
Yes, I understand findagrave has set rules about whether or not one is "worthy" of requesting management, but as far as the memorials I manage, I'm typically more than happy to transfer management even if they're a distant relative, next door neighbor, 12th cousin once removed.. whatever. I'm not the "keeper of memorials" -- that's not my purpose for having added them in the first place.

Thank you so much for your efforts at finding my husband's great-grandparents' graves. I appreciate the time you took to try to locate them. I especially appreciate the fact that when you saw that there wasn't a headstone, that you were conscientious enough to actually place pine cone markers around where the headstones would have been. What a sweet thought!

Would it be possible to use the photo on my little blog? I'm just starting out and would love to use it.

Thanks again! God bless

RE: Singletons @ Greenwood
Thanks so much for thinking of me and taking the time to write. The babies are not in our family.

Pearl Lee Smith (1910-1974)
You very generously asked if I'd like you to transfer the memorial you created for Pearl Lee Smith at Greenwood Memorial Park. The answer is yes. Please accept my apology for not getting back to you sooner. I recently found Pearl's obituary, so I can now add information about her life.

Thank you so much for your help. Yes I'm sure it's the correct one, we have the spelling listed both ways in our family!
