I am a direct descendant of William Backus, Sr., who came from England to settle in Old Saybrook, Middlesex, CT, by 1637. He died in 1661, in Norwich, New London, CT.|
My mother's ancestral line descends from James Pike, who was settled in Charlestown, Middlesex, MA by 1647 and later moved to Reading, Middlesex, MA..
With few exceptions, my Find A Grave memorials were created for members of my family tree. My direct ancestral surnames include: Abbe, Allen, Atkins, Backus, Bailey, Bassett, Benton, Brown, Buelow, Bumpas, Caswell, Chaffn, Charles, Chase, Clement, Cram, Cross, Damon, Eaton, Engleshie, Gard, Garnzey, Giguere, Hale, Hayward, Hebard, Howard, Johnson, Lapham, McCowen, Merrifield, Palmer, Pierce, Pike, Pitkin, Ross, Story, Stresseman, Thurber, Towne, Webster, Wheelock, White, Willis and Wright.

I transferred Nancy to you per your request and was happy to do so. You and I are most likely related. I have many Backus members in my tree. The Kidder family came into the tree by marriage. Interesting that they ended up in a town with the same name as the one they left: Claremont. But then they most likely were the original settlers and therefore wanted something of "home." I'll try to figure out my direct connection to the Backus line, but it most likely is through the Crane family. Margaret Dickey Crane - marred an H. Locke - is my fifth great grandmother, b. in Vermont, married and lived for a time in N.H. She is buried in a nearby cemetery to Nancy Pike Kidder - the Rice Lake Cemetery, same county.

Thanks so much for Elizabeth Meacham Bassett's headstone photo. Is it possible to give me directions to that cemetery? I have many buried there and we were not able to find it on our last trip there. My great grand parents are there. Charlene
