Hi Bonnie,

Great question. You asked why I chose to use two different spellings and not go solely by what is recorded on the tombstone.

In the case of the this family, I did research on behalf of a descendant and found various spellings.

However, I'd like to address your question as it is an important one.

One of the great dilemmas of genealogy is how to spell someone's name.

Many change the spelling of their names (first and last) during their lifetimes, so you'll often encounter varying spellings. Some may be legitimate, as in the case of an immigrant who spelled the surname one way in the home country, and another here. Or they may have been illiterate or chosen to change a spelling during a lifetime. And remember that when someone dies, it is usually not the decedent who makes the decision as to spelling (prior to dying.)

In some cases, it is the choice of a descendant replacing a missing or damaged stone long after the death.

There is rarely any explanation as to choices, so I elect to show as many possibilities as possible that have been found while researching. And another very important reason is so that either version will be found by a search engine!

hi take a look at him - when you are using the new correction form, it adds exactly what you put there I have to either accept or decline, so instructions like "please add" will go on it. after you look at it send me another correction and i'll go an edit that out, but I wanted you to see how the new form works as we are in beta testing..

Hi Bonnie,
Thank you for the great photo of Aaron Teeter's headstone. I appreciate your gift of service to those of us who live too far away to find our ancestors headstones. May I have your permission to use the photo in my genealogy, give you credit for taking the photo? God bless you for giving of your time and effort to help others. Margaret

Yes that is the memorial I was looking for. I've changed the dates and added a memoorial for his wife and son. Can I trouble you to add the same photo to the two new memorials? They are linked to his memorial.

Thanks for the excellent photo and for helping me to hnor this Civil War veteran.
