Anne Young
Hi Ray,

Returned to the cemetery today to verify Anne's age on the stone. It indeed says 42, but the stone has sunk to more than two-thirds of the way up the number, so if you're only seeing the top portion of 42, it does look like a 19. The ground is mostly frozen, and as it was very overcast today, it was not the best conditions for photographing the section I did manage to (gently) clear away. I've corrected my copy of Elizabeth Freeman's book, as well as the copy that the Town Clerk has in her possession. I apologize for any confusion; we're lucky the stone has stayed so relatively stable for 243 years-- some of the stones at Duck Creek are in bad shape.

RE: Anne Young
Hi Ray,

In 1961, Miss Elizabeth Freeman from the Rich Family Association took an inventory of Wellfleet cemeteries and published a map and transcriptions of all the stones that were visible and legible. I used this reference to locate Anne Young's gravestone (it is one row back from where my own ancestor, Thomas Holbrook is buried). The transcription about her age is also from this booklet. The Anne Young in the Duck Creek Cemetery who died August 9th 1770, was married to Barnabas Young Jr. The stone appears to have sunk into the ground somewhat, and I did brush some snow away from the front of the stone, but the ground is frozen, so I was unable to remove any other vegetation or soil. I'll return to verify the age on the stone tomorrow, and see if I can find any more info for you. I may need to stop at the Town Hall to see if there is additional information there. I'll keep you posted!

Thank you Ray for providing the memorial picture of Louis Sharpley. He was the father of William Sharpley who married my grand aunt, Eleanor Laird. William and Eleanor are buried somewhere else in Accomac County and I am researching them. Thanks again.
