Stories of my Illinois ancestors were shared with me by my great grandmother Grace Ellen Smith Scanlon at an early age and this sparked a deep interest in genealogy and learning more about my heritage. After many years of library and Internet research I decided to visit the areas where my Smith, Rowland, and Wilkerson ancestors once lived. I've now made several trips to Illinois, and over the course of these visits have developed an interest in documenting cemeteries. My main focus is on abandoned family farm and small community cemeteries that are difficult to locate and are in the greatest need of being recorded. Although it has been a few years since I have visited these places in person, I continue to research at home and help fellow researchers on the Historical Society of Montgomery County, Illinois website. |
My experiences visiting and documenting abandoned cemeteries in Illinois ultimately let me me to return to school and earn a masters degree in archaeology. As part of my masters thesis I researched how the victims of the St. Francis Dam disaster have been memorialized. I am thankful for my many fellow find-a-gravers across the U.S.A. who helped me locate and photograph the grave of each flood victim so they are not forgotten. This research continues. Join our discussions in the FB group St. Francis Dam Archaeology.
I do my best to provide complete and accurate information in all my postings. Corrections are encouraged! I will gladly transfer memorials to family and I am happy share my photographs, but please give proper credit: "Ann Stoddard, Find A Grave #46964942". If I have offended anyone by adding their loved ones to the site please let me know and I will promptly remove the memorial.

You're welcome! I just got lucky and took a pic not knowing it was a request. Their office is not very helpful, so I take a bunch of pics in different areas and hope maybe to fulfill a request. Take care! -Carolyn

Thanks for uploading the picture of the sign I placed there last year. I was hoping it would not blow away or get trashed. You are a great contributor to Find A Grave!
Thank you so much for transferring Essie Kramer's memorial to me. I didn't ask which made it so much a pleasant surprise to have it offered. TerryH

You have photographed a picture of a grave stone: Bertha L Morrison in the Gunterman Cemetery in Fieldon, IL. Her husband's name is also on the stone: Joel E Morrison. I understand thier twins are buried there also, but there is no mention of them. Joel E Morrison remarried: Nancy Reddish and they had three children and one of their children is my husband's father. Joel E Morrison and Nancy Reddish are buried in the Reddish Cemetery in Fieldon, IL. Thought you may want to know in case anyone asks why there is no date of death on the stone in Gunterman. Thank you. Darlene Montgomery Morrison.
|Vivienne Wallace||Charles Bramley|
Hi Ann. I see you are photographing Crossland cemetery, Chesterfield, You have a Charles Bramley buried there. The details are incorrect. Charles was born in Snaith, Yorkshire 13 May 1834. Son of Thomas and Maria (Miller) Bramley. He sailed from England 1859 and settled at Chesterfield 1860,he married Yorkshire born Mary Crossland 10 February 1860. Charles,like several of his brothers, was a chemist/druggist. Charles and Mary had five children. Maria, John Thomas, George Robert, Florence Mary and Charles William. Charles died 22 August 1881. His wife Mary died 27 July 1894 at Western Mound. Charles was the 10th of 11 children born to Thomas and Maria. Their 6th child, Thomas married and came to Australia in 1854. Thomas joined two siblings, Harriot and William.
Hope this information may be of some assistance. I am in the throes of writing the Bramley history and am hoping to make contact with any of Charles's descendants.
Vivienne Jones (nee Wallace).
