There are approximately 204 burial sites in Highland County, Virginia (excluding duplicates & other anomalies). Four of those the current landowners are refusing access to the graves. Robert & Emma Matheny documented many of the 203 cemeteries in their 1986 book Vital Records of Highland County, Va. As of October 2016, I have visited 180, concentrating on the small family cemeteries. Sometimes the Matheny's left out directions or listed land marks or land owners that are no longer relevant. Making the task of finding all the cemeteries a challenge. Many of the family burying grounds are in remote mountain areas requiring a hike to reach them. Many have been abandoned & it takes some time to clear away brush in order to take good photographs.
Documenting graveyards in Bath County, Virginia & Pendleton County, West Virginia, is ongoing.
I use a variety of sources to supply information for the graves I list. I attempt to add more than just dates and places. References that I use are Vital Records of Highland County Virginia by the Mathneys (They traipsed all over Highland from the late 1950's - 1985 transcribing many of the headstones in the county) Highland County Death Records 1853-1898 by Clay Hamilton. Pendleton County WV Grave Register. Other sources include 1910 Mortons History of Highland County & 1911 History of Pendleton County. Various family histories. Early issues of The Highland Recorder. Over the years I have complied information on graves (some unmarked) from the elder residents of Highland & Pendleton.
By November 2011 I had placed 1,000 names into the system, that seemed a lot at the time. As I had only intended to work on Surnames related to my family tree. Since then I hit 3,000 in October 2013. March 2014 4,000. As of July 2014 I surpassed 5,000 names.

I've sent a similar message to the contributor of the other memorial. When I find duplicates I don't try to judge which should stay, I usually just send a message to both contributors and let them work it out.
I was wondering about the similarity of the cemeteries, but in this case I'd say since you have a photo of the actual memorial stone, you've got it in the right place!
Unfortunately the other contributor doesn't have a profile and has their public messages disabled, So we might need to appeal to the admins to make the changes.

|judy haines||Simmons Family Cemetery Location|
Hi - Thanks for all of your help in trying to help me locate the Simmons Family Cemetery in Highland Co. Also thanks for documenting all of the gravesites that you have so far. I am planning on visiting the Union Chapel Cemetery off of Maple Sugar Road this Sunday. Could you tell me the approximate location of the Simmons Family Cemetery where Mark Simmons is buried? I am assuming that it is south of the Union Chapel Cemetery off of Maple Sugar near Highland,Va according to the info on the website. Maybe you can tell me about how far south and in which direction the cemetery is located from Union Chapel Cemetery. I am planning on driving around the area. It looks like a beautiful area.

Could you tell me how to get to the Simmons Family Cemetery? I would like to visit the gravesite of Mark Simmons. He is an ancestor of mine. I am planning on visiting your area this weekend. Would you happen to have the GPS coordinates? It looks like it is on private property. This is the one off of Maple Sugar Road and has 9 interments in it. Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

My grandmother's family was from Pendleton County back to the 1750's at the massacre of Fort Seybert. I am entering family history into family search and I would sincerely appreciated permission to use the photos that you have taken. I will be happy to give you credit for photos. Just let me know how to write the credit. The photo that I just found is for Robert Anderson Propst and Tena Hevener Propst buried in Proptsvillle cemetery. Thanks, Karen
