Bio and Links
Bio Photo Hello,
My name is Joe Chrisman, I have been the Cemetery Sexton for the City of Winfield for 19 years and a genealogy buff for over 30 years.

I would be glad to transfer any memorial I have added, as long as the person is not related to me.

My Chrisman line started in Virginia, moving into Kentucky and arriving in Kansas in 1884. My 6th Great Grandfather Jacob Chrisman and 7th Great Grandfather Jost Hite, were the focus on the television series "Who Do You Think You Are?", Tim McGraw episode. What a thrill it was to see my family genealogy on TV!

I am a amature Civil War researcher and manage the Facebook page "Civil War Veterans Buried in Winfield Kansas Cemeteries". Please check it out and "Like" the page as well.

I also interested in "Co. H, 1st Kentucky Cavalry" history. My GG Grandfather Isaac "Ike" Chrisman was wounded 19 January, 1862 at the Battle of Mill Springs. Some say it was Ike Chrisman that fired the fatal shot that killed General Felix Kirk Zollicoffer. Documentation of this can be found in "A Boys Story of the Battle of Fishing Creek Kentucky" by John Worth Simpson.

Richard Whitaker
I have attempted to find Richard Whitaker on more than one occasion. On this last attempt, I tried to pinpoint the actual plot or space he was buried. Cemetery record shows him to be in Sec. C, Row 40, Space 7. This needs clarification:

There is a large Whitaker plot in this section. It has a huge stone obelisk type monument with a broad 4 corner base and has some markings on each side. Three of the sides have Whitaker names and the fourth side has the Shackelford surname. All around the monument are individual stones with names on them.

I randomly checked a Whitaker name from the Grove Hill database in order to see if I had the correct plot. Kate was located in the same section, Row 40, Space 10. Space #9 belongs to Henrietta Ormsby Whitaker, wife of Walter C. Space #8 belongs to General Walter Chiles Whitaker himself. There is no official stone for #7 that we can see. I am talking about the flat rectangular individual stones as seen in the photo. The last space #6 sits to the other side of the general (farthest left) and it belongs to his other wife, Lizzie Dickerson Whitaker and it is a taller tombstone. All the other stones completely around the center obelisk can be identified, but none of them are Richard.

Check out the photo. The 4 stones sitting in the forefront are supposed to belong to Annie, Henry, Sue, Ernest, and Estelle. The only problem here is that there are not 5 markers. There are only 4. As best as I can determine, Estelle and Richard do not offically have markers in this cemetery. I just know they are supposed to be at this location with the rest of the family. Forgive me for posting this photo, but there is no other one available anywhere here to fulfill this request. We can account for all the names, but not the actual markers.

Holler my way anytime at all if I can be of further assistance....
Donnie
