Although, I have been interested in genealogy for nearly 30 years, I only recently became aware of the truly fragile state of our ancestors' headstones and how important it is to preserve them, if only digitally, for future generations.|
As information is being digitized and made public, we are learning more and more about those who went before us. The information is mostly good, but sometimes it is not. I think that we need to be judicious about what should be added to our memorial sites.
My purpose for placing memorials on Find A Grave is to honor and recognize these individuals from our past. I’m not interested in volume added as most of the memorials that I create are connected with my (or my husband’s) families – albeit sometimes they are quite distant.
I HAVE THREE REQUESTS:
1. Please do not add death certificates to my sites. In many instances the causes of death and the physician’s comments (never intended for general public view) can be very hurtful for descendants and families. They are wonderful tools when working on genealogies, but are often riddled with errors and “too-much-information.”
2. Remember, pictures are copy-written. You are welcome to my gravestone/cemetery pictures, but please acknowledge your source. There are other members who also add pictures to my memorials. Click on their names to check on their policies. Most often, they just want acknowledgement as well.
3. If you find errors, know of family links, or have information that I might add, please let me know through Corrections & Additions edits or at PLDFamilies@aol.com

I had contacted you about 6 mos ago, because you kindly posted a picture of my dad's grave, and I had you add a little to the info about him. I didn't know at the time that it was possible to transfer the memorial to a person other than the one who originally posted it. I just learned that last night, and now I'm wondering if you would mind transferring his grave to me. I am his only child, and there is no one closer who will ever be asking for this honor. His name is Robert Irwin Thorniley, and his grave is # 121180590.

What source did you use for the date and location of the marriage of James Lydick to Sarah Chapman (4 Mar 1824 Indiana Co PA)? Thanks for any citation you can provide!

Penny, I want to thank you so much for all you do for others through Find A Grave. I am trying very hard to put as much on Ancestry and Family Tree Maker as I can of family history so that my descendants and others can view their heritage. I am no longer able to visit cemeteries because of age and health, but thanks to Find A Grave I can still visit them. Thanks to people like you I CAN view where they rest. I hope you will not mind my using copies of your photos in my family files. I have had so many gracious people to help me along. In my contacting others for permission I have only had two out of well over 200 to be less than helpful. May God bless you as you try to preserve and help others with records through Find A Grave.

Thank you for willing to transfer Sonya to me. We were 1st cousins 1x. Her papaw & My papaw were brothers. We were close growing up then got back in touch several years ago, with all the research we did. I was so glad to have the time with her that I did, like you said despite her health issues.
I guess we would be related by marriage as they say :-)
I truly appreciate you doing this and taking the time to take care of these memorials.

Hi Penny, it's been a while! I cleaned up Old Fairview (again) prior to Memorial day and even found yet another name/stone. I'll be getting more of the stones out from under the sod and hope to get this cemetery back in shape and identify more of them. Hope all is well. ......Jan

This grave belongs to Mary Caroline Campbell, who was born Aug. 15, 1843 and died Oct. 17, 1843. She was the daughter of William Campbell (Find A Grave Memorial# 30425689) and Martha Amelia Slaysman Campbell (Find A Grave Memorial# 30425850).
I certainly appreciate all your work for the Find a Grave website. I use it often and appreciate those, like you, who take the time and make the effort to add information to it. Having worked on genealogy for some time, I know the time and effort it takes. Thanks again for sharing both of these so unselfishly.
