Bio and Links
Bio Photo I grew up in the Northwestern area of Orange County, NC. next to the Alamance, Caswell county lines. I have a number of kin buried @ Mt Zion Church. Byrd's, Florence's

I have a number of Shepherd Kin buried in Guilford & Alamance Counties.I am currently working on linking and providing information on as many as i can. I have set up a Virtual Cemetery for the Civil War Guilford- Alamance Shepherd's . One for those that died during the war and one for the survivors of the war. Total of 30. See my Virtual Cemeteries to view it. I will add names as i find them.

ATTENTION: If your looking for the Surname SHEPHERD, SHEPARD, SHEPPARD & SHEPHARD in Alamance or Guilford Counties, they can all be related. A German immigrant from Pennsylvania William Schaefer or Schaeffeer settled in Guilford County in or before 1775 near what is now the Guilford-Alamance county line area. Early court clerks had a hard time spelling Schaefer so it was listed as Shaver in Census and early documents. His childern used the Shaver name, but most of their childern , the third generation started using the English version, SHEPHERD. Due to lack of schooling and early grave stone makers misspelling the name, and different census takers spelling it different it started to be spelled different ways. You can find the same family's with different spelling of Shepherd.
A number of the early Guilford Shepherd's moved to Illinois and Indiana in the 1830-1870 range to take advantage of the opening of land grants by the government. Because of a lack of names of the whole family living at a house in the 1830- 1840 census records its very hard to figure out which family members that moved and who their family members are.

I enjoy listing people i have known over the years . I Hope in someway this helps people find their relatives and friends. I will be glad to add pictures for you, just email the picture and info needed.

William A Hall
Hello,

I saw your description of William A. Hall b. 2/10/1843 - d. 10/8/1924, who is buried at Union Ridge Church in Alamance County NC.

Do you have any information about his siblings or parents?

My 4th G-grandfather Jehu (Jahew) Hall 1772-1856 is buried in this cemetery. I wondered if they are related.

Thanks!

Bessie Susan Shepherd Sayers
Hi,

My name is Rhonda, and Bessie S. Shepherd Sayers is my Great Grandmother. It shows that her gravesite is listed at the IOOF Cemetery in Elk Garden, WV. According to my Granny (Bessie's daughter) she is actually buried in the family plot in the Nethken Cemetery. My dad and I are super interested in anything you might share about the Shepherd side of the family.

Thanks,
Rhonda

RE: Caswell County
My Boswell line married with the Florence line in Caswell Co. I have quite a few Florence names in my family tree. I didn't see the Boswell name you mentioned but I'd bet that we are related through marriage. I have a Florence cousin who is a minister in Efland. His line traces back to Caswell County and his grandmother and my great grandmother were best friends. Those lines are very connected. I have a book about the Boswells in Caswell Co. so I'll look for your ancestor there to see if I find a connection.

Brice Martin
Just wondering if you have ever visited Cypress Hill cemetery in New York? or did someone else take this marker picture?

Also, are you "kin" to Brice Martin since Caswell County is not far from Henry County, Virginia?

Thank YOU!

I enjoyed reading your bio. It would not surprise me to find that our family trees cross as some point, as my maternal grandparents were from Caswell and Person Counties. I have many ancestors in Wheeler's Church Cemetery, which you are most likely familiar with. Rimmers, Boswells, Wheeleys and many others all hail from your area.

William Hall
Hi,
I noticed that you posted the military record for William Hall, buried in Union Ridge Church Cemetery, on his find a grave memorial.

I wondered if you might be related to him.

He was my great grand uncle.

Thanks!

Tammy
