Norton and Eunice Still

Sorry about the previous message.
I am writing this to because I was wondering if you can email the photos of them for my own private use and to put them in my family tree. Norton Still is my 4th great grand uncle.

Thank you,

RE: Hendra
Hi my name is Sarah and I was just looking at your memorial for Ethel Marguerite Hendra Spencer, are you related to her? I happen to be a relative of the Andrew Sampson from the 1910 census. I am looking for information on how he came to be living with them and why he would list them as his next of kin on his 1918 WWI draft card? Any help with this would be great.
Thanks Sarah

Dear Sarah, Thank you for contacting me concerning Ethel Marguerite (Hendra) Spencer. I am related to Ethel only by marriage. Her husband, William Everett Spencer, mother and my grandfather were first cousin. So I actually have no direct line to Ethel's family nor any connection to the family other than the Hendra family and the Spencer family were neighbors in Speaker Township. However, due to your question, I did some additional research and found the following which may or may not be helpful to you.

1910 U.S. Federal Census for Speaker Township, Sanilac County, Michigan. Andrew Simpson (Sampson) is a twelve year old boy who is listed as a "hired boy" in the William and Leana Hendra family. There is no indication in the 1910 census records as to any direct relationship of Andrew to the young Sanilac County family.

However, checking in the 1900 U.S. Federal Census, I found several Andrew Simpson but only one fit the criteria of being born in Michigan in or about 1898. If this is the same Andrew Simpson, he was born November 1898 in Volinia Township, Cass County, Michigan. Cass County is on the opposite side of Michigan from Sanilac County. It borders the state of Indiana, just north of South Bend. In the family, Andrew is the third of three children born to Andrew, Sr, and Will E Simpson. Andrew has two older sisters, Prude (13) and Adeline (6). His parents were both born in Michigan and had been married in 1885,

If any of these names sound familiar to your research, then this may be a match to the 12-year old Andrew Simpson living with the Hendra family in 1910.

1910 U.S. Federal census for Andrew Simpson:

Andrew Sampson
Something I forgot to mention Alma (Doud)Sampson died from Epilepsy in a County Nursing Home in Muskegon. Her death Certificate says she was a resident there for 2 yrs and 7 months in March 1917.Which first puts her there in August of 1814 shortly after her husband died.So between the ages of 14 and 16, Andrew somehow made it to the east side of the state probably through an orphanage. He is listed in the 1920 Census living with Fred and Nellie Staley as a Boarder in Greenwood,St. Clair, Michigan. It also Says he was born in Coldwater.

So now In the middle of typing this I stopped to see if I could find some info on an orphanage in Coldwater and as it turns out there was one.see this link:

Andrew Sampson
Andrew Sampson was listed as 1 year old on 1900 Census in Irving, Barry, Michigan, USA.Parents - Charles and Alma.In 1910 Census in Muskegon he is listed as Charles Andrew and 9 years old.His Father died in 1913 and his mother in 1917.His Paternal Grandfather Ernest Sampson died in 1899 and His Grandmother Anna Hermon died in 1877, so he would've never met them.On his Maternal Grandparents Joel Dowd or Doud died in 1899 as well and maternal grandmother Adelia Polly I am still Researching, if that is even her surname.

My Great Grandfather Ernest Clement Sampson (Andrews's brother) started going by the name Charles Ernest Sampson and Charles Andrew Sampson went by Andrew Sampson.

Eventhough I keep all my research and family tree on,I use various websites for my is a very good site to find information for free.Although you do have to sign up for a free profile to view some of the original records.

Let me know if this helps or not.

Take Care,
Jason Sampson
