I'm a 66 year-old retired high school teacher living just outside Philly. My wife and I currently have ten children, aside from fourteen we have fostered over the years. I hope that I'm preserving some history, family, and heritage for them. I've received e-mails from people offering information to add to memorials. One connected an isolated memorial of 13-year-old girl who died in the 1918 influenza pandemic with memorials of her parents and sister; another, provided birth information for a Civil War soldier. I'm also interested in the industrial life of 19th Century Philadelphia which produced as many wealthy humanitarians and philanthropists (e.g., Henry Disston, Matthias Baldwin, William Bucknell) as it did robber barons (e.g., Edward Berwind). If you see inaccuracies in my information, please contact me and I'll make corrections. If you find the the existence of a memorial causes emotional hurt or pain, let me know, and I'll remove it, but I'd ask you to first consider that the purpose of posting memorials is to honor a memory--to insure that the person is not forgotten. Please be patient with any changes you request that I make. I'm discovering that I'm sometimes busier in retirement than I was in the 44 years that I taught.
I'd like to thank all the folks who send me corrections and additional information to post on the memorials. It's fascinating to be able to find insights into the lives of people who, except for time and space, may not really be all that different from us. It makes "the human family" more than a trite phrase. | |

RE:WALTER LONGSTRETH- West Laurel Cemetery in Bala Cynwyd -I INADVERTENTLY CREATED A DUPLICATE of a memorial that you had already created. I really appreciate your had work in creating so many memorials. But could you please look at my memorial to Walter #100822539 and consider adding the info that I have on his memorial. Walter and his wife were close friends of my family. I know this takes extra time so I will thank you now and I plan to delete my duplicate. Thank you so much for memorializing my cousin,
Lt.George Bradford Patterson, JG, USN. My father used to tell me when I was a small child about the tragedy of the Mary Luckenbach, and how the ship was carrying munitions to help the Russians fight back the Nazis during World War II when it was hit by an aerial torpedo. However, these brave young men did not give their lives in vain; their legacy lives on in the freedom which we now enjoy.
I do appreciate your kindness in remembering George Patterson, and once again, my sincerest thanks.

They are John R Drexel Sr., his wife Alice Drexel, their son John R Jr, his son John III and his wife Noreen Drexel. I feel that these would best be maintained under you. However, I would like to keep John III and Noreen Drexel's memorials, since they were good friends of mine and relatives. Would you be interested in me transferring them to you?

| Emily Corson Poley Longstreth
great job on inscribing all the Longstreths in West Laurel HILL cemetery.
Emily and her husband Walter were a great influence on my becoming a Quaker in the 1940's and I've continued my membership in the same Quaker Meting in northeast Phila.
Her husband Walter Cook Longstreth died in Philadelphia in Jan 1975. Walter had only one sister, Edith Longstreth Wood 1871-1967-- no brothers . So you may wish to add a correction for her Emily's memorial as well as the memorial for his father, Samuel Noble Longstreth and mother Mary Hance Cook.

I just found your memorial to the Spanish Influenza victims. My great grandmother died from it also here in Kansas. I also just discovered that this strain of influenza had its origins at Ft. Riley, Kansas. My grandfather served as a medic there during WWI. I am not sure if that is how his mother contracted the illness, but it does make you wonder!
