Prompted by my father to personally find all family cemeteries in the Monroe Co., TN, area, I learned how addictive "walking on the ground your ancestors walked on" is! An awakening was finding the horrific conditions some cemeteries are in, including those managed by TVA. Finding the Find-a-Grave website will enable me to more readily show the world what can happen when no one cares. I am a UT graduate with 3 grown children. Recently, I became aware of 3 African American Cemeteries in Lonsdale - the middle of the city of Knoxville, TN. Research done by Robert McGinnis proved it to encompass 24 acres, most of which became a dumping ground, was overgrown, and was a location for unspeakable criminal activity. Sheriff J. J. Jones has undertaken the clearing of the worst - Southern Chain and Longview. I am attempting to capture every stone possible and preserve the memories of these special people before they again become victims and disappear. Some photos are very bad, and I apologize. Due to the terrain conditions, I was very limited. My research priorities are Moser, Nichols, Nuchols, Davis, Cook, Clemens, Hurst, and the families involved in the Howard-McGhee-Jones Feud in TN.

Freedmen's Mission - Hugh Cansler
Hugh also had brothers
James Monroe Cansler born 1830
Martin Van Buren Cansler born 3 Jan 1838 Died 20 May 1883
Andrew Jackson Cansler born 1836
Hugh himself was born 26 March 1835 as you can see on the tombstone, and his full name was Hugh Lawson White Cansler. (His mother was very politically inclined)

Francis Moser 35317420
Hi Tommie, I noticed Francis Moser 1763-1836 memorial lists his father as himself, perhaps someone send an EDIT which was meant for his son, also named Francis. I sent an EDIT request to remove Francis as his own father and also to remove his spouse, the Elizabeth SNIDER Moser listed was born 1813, while Francis' first wife was Elizabeth MILLER Moser, I think she was born 1760. If any questions, we can compare notes, just send me an email at Francis and his second wife Mary Ann are my 4 great grandparents. I hope you had a Great Thanksgiving!

Oh dear re Katie Berry
Well, this is what happens when one is going daft. Please excuse the rash of messages regarding Kate Berry Denton. My speculations were utterly without merit, and in my own notes I had the evidence of her being Tobe's sister (the census showing her nephews in her household with Denton).

Please forgive.

redo re: Kate Berry Denton
I've had to reconsider whether Kate is actually the daughter of Cap and Sally Berry. I can find her in no records in their household. Do you suppose it is possible that she was closely related, perhaps by way of Cap's cousin, Dallas Berry, who also lived in New Holland, GA? I don't know how Kate's age has been established, but she doesn't show up in any census records of that family if she were actually born in 1880. I know that Mamye Sue helped her apply for old age assistance, and in that case it would have helped if she were older on paper than she actually was. Mamye Sue was not above fudging when it came to age. (For example, Mamye Sue's insurance company sent her a letter informing her that they knew she was not as young as she was claiming to be.) If Kate Berry were the daughter of Dallas Berry, son of Milton Berry (who was the uncle of Cap Berry), it would change her age to being about ten years younger, but place her there in New Holland, GA, in proximity to Tobe's family.

Kate Berry Denton
Hi Tommie,

I don't know if this is of interest (or perhaps you've already checked it out and the information is not accurate), but I found a page on ancestry that indicates that the "Cap Berry" who was the father of Kate Berry (who married Charles Denton) was named Cantacuzene Columbus Berry (1839-1910, GA], and was called "Cap" because of service in the war.

You may be aware that Tobe (Andrew Cicero) Berry worked for Mamye Sue McGhee on the farm for years. He was also the son of Cap Berry and Sally Johnson Berry. I can't locate Kate in the list of Cap's children on the aforementioned site, though perhaps "Kate" was the nickname for "Louisa Alcesta," just as somehow "Tobe" was the nickname for Andrew Cicero Berry (married Caster Akins).

The Smiths were potters. The backward "S" was their pottery mark. They were in the pottery business with the Rasars & Grindstaffs(all related).William Grindstaff was well known. His pottery mark was a crescent moon. That backward S stumped me for years.

RE: Rebecca Howard Dyer
Rebecca was laid to rest in Canehill, Arkansas on a family farm in a private cemetery. I haven't been able to find it but this is all I know.

Thank you for checking back with me, I really do appreciate it a lot!

No. I am not related. I just found the headstone while walking the cemetery one day. I am sure you have some great stories!

RE: Margarett Davis
regarding death cert-they got the mother right on the death certificate as Shelley but the father was Jacob Miller Shaffer, also the birth year is wrong, hard to dispute the death year on a state's death certificate
