Hi, Bjorn: I just returned from Quaker Meeting, so it was perfect to find your beautiful photos of George Fox's gravestone on his site. Thank you for adding them and directing me to them. I hope to visit Friend George's grave one day. I would also be grateful if you would correct the misinformation about the way that William Penn secured the land for Pennsylvania. The land was given to Penn as payment for a debt that King Charles II owed to Penn's late father, Admiral Sir William Penn, who had helped finance one of the King's wars. I find it a wonderful irony that Penn's "peaceable kingdom" was obtained through a debt repaid for financing war. Dear Bjorn: Thank you for posting a profile of George Fox on Find-A-Grave. As a Quaker, I am pleased to see our founder memorialized. A point of clarification: William Penn did not buy the territory of Pennsylvania from King Charles. The King owed Penn's late father Admiral Penn a great deal of money for helping the Crown to finance a war, so he gave the land to William Penn as payment for that debt.Added by Tigress on Apr 09, 2009 7:14 PM | | |
