Bio and Links
Bio Photo I kept putting this short bio off, but after doing photo requests for people and "meeting them" through their bios, I decided it was time. I am a retired school teacher who loves doing genealogy work and exploring cemeteries. I love the concept of Find A Grave where people in different areas are so willing to help each other with photos. When my husband and I are fulfilling photo requests, we sometimes add more stones to a cemetery. I am always willing to "give these up" to family members who can add more information. Just ask.

RE: Icarian Cemetery in Adams County Iowa
I do not have any position w/ the Icarian Community &/or Cemetery. My wife and I were simply driving along hwy #2 (?) from the Amtrak station in Osceola and were attracted by the sign for the site.
Unfortunately, I am not finding my photo file from that visit, so can only quote from memory. There are a number of individual headstones, but they are literally all in French, a language 'foreign' to me, esp. as written. The inscriptions are quite simple and convey basic information, insofar as I can tell. The commemorative stone is in English, and I think, more comprehensive/complete than the individual headstones. I do not recall any markers indicating military service for any nation. I thought at the time, that as an experimental agrarian settlement, military service might have been 'frowned upon' by those most respected in the community.
The settlement was (Jan, 2012) and I hope, still is a very pretty site, nearly a quarter mile from the highway, and in its isolation you can easily envision what it may have been like 150 years ago.

Thank you for making the original memorial and adding the gravestone photo. It is warped and laying on the ground, but your photo is quite readable.

I would like to ask for your permission to use that photo (and others you may have taken of gravestones of my ancestors) in my family tree on Because the photographer has a copyright for each photo, I always ask before using a photo on another web site. I will, of course, put your name as the photographer and the web site of the memorial as the source.

Thank you for considering my request,

RE: Leora Torres in Graceland Cemetery
Thank you for notifying me about Leora. I am very glad she is alive. Please give her our regards.
I don't remember where I got the information that she had passed. It's just a blank for me. I apologize for this terrible mistake.
I hope she is well and, possibly, still living in her house in Avoca.
If you would, please write to me at
