RE: Standeford
Hello. Thank you for getting back to me. I just found this site by accident last night and thought how cool is this! I am not really sure what all turning it over to me entails but yes I am related. Norma was my mother. My father just passed away the end of March and we will be placing his headstone beside hers soon. Probably the first of September. Please let me know what all I need to do if anything. Thank you

I return, again, to thank you for this transfer...Our great-great-great grandfather had 20 kids, settled in or near Gerster, Missouri in/ about 1835..Many of next 2 generations went to Oklahoma, I did not realize so many until lately..Again, thanks for the transfer and for all your good works on findagrave...Blessings..

Diane, that is a nice memorial you made for Leonard Voegeli. You might be interested that the Novotny and Mrasek families have family lots in the same block.

RE: Schmidts
When you gave the name Schmidt I figured there was a good chance they were at Catherine. There are a ton of them there. My husband's family is Schmitt. The picture on Jacob's of the big concrete sign is the settler's sign. If I put it on there, then his name is on it. It's engraved with the church records for the earliest settlers of Catherine and has a map that shows which plot is theirs, if they know.

Oh...If you have scans of photos of their makers you can email them to me at It might be possible to match the details if the names are missing.

RE: Metal headstones
These metal crosses are all over Rush, Russell and Ellis counties in the Volga German cemeteries. From what I understand, they were the type they used back in Russia. They were made by local men. My husband's gg-grandfather was a blacksmith and made a lot of them.

One big problem with these is that somewhere along the line many of the name plates have either worn/rusted over or been painted over. Some never had one. I'm within an hour or two of most of these cemeteries and spent a lot of time in them last fall.

If they had these crosses, they're Volga German Catholics and most likely buried in the cemetery of whichever church they attended. I can't promise anything, but if you'd like to give me their names, I might be able to get an idea which community they were from or keep an eye out for them.
