Find A Grave is a great way to build a family tree as well as find and share information. My brother, Steve Higgerson, has done a great deal of research into the family history, and his findings are the basis of what I have posted here. Over the past 25 years I have taken many pictures of old gravestones, some of which no longer exist, and it is these pictures that I am anxious to share, as well as the information. My intent is to post information at this site that is free from errors. All too often I see dates and facts about family history that are inaccurate, and I want to correct that as best I can. I hold myself to the same standard, so if anything that I have posted at this site is incorrect, you would be doing me a great favor in pointing it out to me. All information I post is the most accurate information that I have at my disposal. Thanks for reading, and be in touch.|

Good Morning Tom,
Thank you for your prompt response regarding Barney McFarland.
I am unable to do any editing at this time regarding Barney because there is an edit pending for you in Find A Grave.
As far as our relationship to Barney McFarland, where do I start?
My sister and I have been researching our family genealogy for at least 25 years. We both live in Michigan, although our roots begin in West End, Illinois. Almost every person buried in Pleasant Valley Cemetery is somehow related to us. Every summer we travel to southern Illinois to do more research and to connect with our "roots".
We had a 1st cousin 1x removed by the name of Elsie Raley (6-24-1904 - 9-29-2005). She lived across the road from Pleasant Valley almost her whole life. Elsie was a warm, quiet, religious person.
Elsie was the daughter of Effie Anderson. Effie's father was Albert Alves Anderson (11-29-1847 - 7-16-1928), who was my great grandfather. Albert Alves was the son of William Green Anderson, and he was my 2nd great grandfather. William Green Anderson had a daughter by the name of Mary "Polly" Anderson 8-6-1857 - 12-1-1954. She is also buried in Pleasant Valley Cemetery. Please bear with me regarding this information.
On one of our trips to Illinois, we picked up Elsie and took her to Pleasant Valley Cemetery. After returning to her home we began discussing our family. Elsie told us about Mary "Polly" Anderson, whom she had known for years before Polly died. The story was so "scandalous" at the time, that Elsie was actually whispering to us over 100 years later. Elsie said Mary "Polly" Anderson had a daughter whom Polly named Viola Olive "Ollie" Anderson (1880 - 8-14-1961). William Green Anderson, Polly's father said she could not marry the father of her child, who was Barney McFarland. Being the obedient daughter, she did not marry him. In fact, even though she lived to be over 100 years old, she never married, remaining single for the rest of her life.
My preference would have been to send this information to you on your personal email.
I hope I haven't lost you in my ramblings. If you have any questions, please contact me.

I saw your memorial for Barney McFarland and his wife, Sarah Elizabeth Johnson in Little Springs Cemetery, Hamilton County, Illinois. Barney and Elizabeth are actually buried in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Saline County, Illinois. Barney McFarland is in our family tree along with his wife. They are found in Cemeteries, Volume 4, Saline County, Illinois, published by the Saline County Genealogical Society, 1993. In addition my sister and I went to Pleasant Valley Cemetery this summer and saw their tombstone. Their tombstone is located between their son Thomas McFarland and my great grandfather Albert Anderson.
I was the person who entered Barney and Elizabeth McFarland in Pleasant Valley Cemetery on 8-1-2010. They have 3 sons, Delmer, Egbert, Thomas McFarland and several grandchildren who are also buried in Pleasant Valley Cemetery.
Thank you for the information on the other McFarland memorials you added to Little Springs Cemetery.
Are you related to the McFarland's? Please contact me with an email.

Please read the caption I put up for the photo. Lois was cremated, and has no stone. Her ashes were buried on top of her father's grave.
|Ed Smith||Lena Steele Reeves|
The note on Lena's memorial are from cemetery records (b.CA d.Santa Cruz, CA Cremains/Laffette Steele grave) reflect she was born in California, died at Santa Cruz, CA, and her cremated remains (cremains) are buried in the grave site of Laffette Steele (her father). I hope this helps.
All the best.

Since another person has claimed your request for Joseph Steele's marker, I'll wait until the claim has expired before posting the photo of the joint marker on his memorial page. You may copy my photo and use it in anyway that you'd like.
I have claimed your photo requests for the Anderson's and Steeles. If you would like any other photos when you request them can you put that Michelle will get it so no one else claims them? I have reached my photo requesting amount.
