We are Matthew and Chrissy Myers. We have been into old stones and cemeteries for years, and got back on the site a while ago. We are working on a project to do Military and Civil War graves in the NC area mostly and love taking road trips and have discovered a few old cemeteries and added them on here. I have been in the military for 16 years now. |

Thanks for the apology. I would love to be able to clean all of the dirty stones in JC, but I'm not able to do that, and maybe just taking more pictures is a better use of my time. But it does bother me that so many stones are in such bad shape. Putting the stones on the ground makes it impossible to keep them clean; the grass and weeds and ants just love to cover them up. But I do appreciate the extra work you do, like in the cemetery on the hill next to the ag building on 210. I had tried to find some people to go back with me to help clean it up because I knew there had to be more stones there. (I looked up the owner of the land, and the wealthiest man probably in the county owns it along with two other leading businessmen; I wonder why? I figure they somehow made money on it, but took NO responsibility for keeping it up. I know there are no taxes on cemeteries, but they also are very small. Anyway, I didn't try to contact them, and I've forgotten the man's name, but he owns Four Oaks Bank and a lot of other banks, but still lives in Smithfield.) Anyway, I was glad to see that you and Chrissy went back and did find some additional stones.
You are lucky to have a partner. My husband went with me a couple of times, but he wasn't really interested, and most people just think I am crazy to spend my spare time in cemeteries, but I really enjoy the hunt, and all of the surprises you see while driving and walking around in the woods. I have worked with the coordinator of the http://www.johnstoncountygenealogy.org/
website to help him identify some "lost" cemeteries (from old records), and I really enjoyed that because they are usually small family cemeteries and were often a challenge to find.
I was adding some old photos I had taken, but not edited and posted, from Piney Grove tonight, and sent you a couple of little notes; I hope you don't mind. When you work with so many photos and names and stats, it is almost impossible to get every single detail right. But we still provide a tremendous amount of very useful data on our own time and our own dime, and we do our best to do it perfectly, so we should always be proud of what we are doing, and i have seen the amount of work that you and Chrissy have done, and I know it is appreciated by many people, including me. Keep up the good work!
