Oak Forest Cemetery
Hi Kathline,

I found the following information in regards to
Oak Forest Cemetery, and thought you would like
to have it. The information will fill in some
blanks for the "unknown" graves you have listed.

Here it is:

Oak Forest Cemetery (Guins Cove) Blount County,

I found this story years ago in a folder in the Wallace State Genealogy Library in Hanceville, Alabama. Just uncovered these notes today and this is my attempt at transcribing them.

Deep in Guins Cove in a beautiful grove lies a small cemetery once lovingly tended, but too many
years neglected and forgotten. Until two cousins, Lettie Johnson Dutton and Gladys Merrill, decided to undertake the of restoring it. So with the
assistance of other relatives and some friends,
the task was begun. it wasn't easy because the
cemetery was in a pasture and the stones had been knocked over, and it was literally grown up in grass, bushes and trees.

Finally, a fence and gate completed the restoration. And Lettie has been responsible for keeping the grass cut. No one knows exactly when
this cemetery was started but Lettie and Gladys remember hearing their Great Grandmother, Rebecca Johnson Culwell, and other relatives long since passed on mention that a little slave boy was buried there, so it must have been in existence since before the Civil War. Among those buried there are the following: Joseph S. Culwell, Great Grandmother of Gladys and Lettie; Lewis Davis, Grandfather of Lettie; Telitha Curl Davis and Missiour Johnson Dillashaw.

The author of this story is unknown.

Lettie Johnson Dutton is my Aunt, a sister of my
mother, Bertha Laverne Johnson. I visited this
cemetery years ago with Aunt Let leading us to its

Also, I found a separate sheet with the following:

Oak Forest Cemetery Guins Cove

Joseph Stanwick Culwell - Born 1824 - Died 1885

Lewis Luke Davis - Born 1837 - Died Feb 7, 1887

Taletha Curl Davis - Died 1883, 3rd week of August

Mrs. Nann Culwell

Mrs. Missouri Johnson Dillashaw - Died 1900's?

Master Bramblett Johnson - Age 3 - Died 1858

Miss Josie Dillashaw - Age 2

Master John R. Davis - Died 1870's (Son of Luke
and Mary Davis)

Letty Davis - Age 2 - Died 1870's (Daughter of
Luke and Mary Davis)

Asentha Johnson

Susanna Johnson

Kathline-I typed this EXACTLY as I got it off
of I know this will help a lot of
folks researching their family history-just like
me. The Talitha Curl Davis mentioned-is the sister
to my great, great grandfather John Henry Curl.
I noticed that 3 of the names above have memorials
made for this cemetery-but the rest of the memorials are marked "Unknown", so this should help give the Unknown's a name.

Thank you for your work on Find A Grave.

Margaret Kuykendall White
Ms. Forrester, Margaret is my great-great grandmother and I am seeking any information that can "prove" the father-daughter relationship between Margaret and her father Peter Thornton Kuykendall. I have the ancestry info. but that is not "real proof". She dies before vital records are kept and I can not find any wills, settlement papers, obits etc. Since Peter was a Primitive Baptist preacher, I feel his Bible has to be "out there" somewhere, listing his children but I have had no luck finding it. If you have any information or ideas on what I might do next I would really appreciate hearing from you. Thank You, Retha Stephens

James Collings
Could this be the same James Collings who married Myrtle McCracken in 1932? She died in 1939. He was the son of James F. Collings 1862-1948 who once was the sheriff of Bullitt Co. Ky. ? Thanks, Ed Lee, volunteer with Bullitt Co. History Center and Museum.

Margaret Woods
I saw your post on Find a Grave. My ggmother is Margaret Woods b. 1829 ohio and died 9 apr 1910 Tennessee. I have her genealogy back a few generations, but can't find her husband James Mckelvey's death date and place. His parents came from Ireland, and I would like to continue research from his parents back. Thought you might know information on what James's fathers name is and where he came from in Ireland.
Hope to hear from you.

Jane Lemons headstone
Kathline- You posted a headstone of Jane Lemons from the Cookston Cemetery, burial place: Cartwright (Sequatchie County), Tennessee. I have been looking for my great great grandmother for some time now, the dates match pretty good, I just want to make sure. Was there anything else written on the headstone? Do you know anything else about her? She was married to William Henry Lemons. She is suppose to be of Indian ancestry. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Maggie Smith Arnold
Katherine, Thanks for the picture and right up on Maggie. I was told by Cousin Margaret Harris that her Father John had remarried but she did not speak about it and as far as I knew no pictures or she did not share them.
I am trying to fine tune things and add new information as I have time.
Again Thanks, C
