Thank you for the transfer Jennifer!
|Lee White||RE: Martha Mattie Hitt|
Martha Ann "Mattie" (Ballard) Hitt was my 5th cousin 2x removed. I based my recommendation that her birth county be changed to Henry County on the following:
1. The History and Genealogy of Peter Montague, of Nansemond and Lancaster Counties, Virginia, and his descendants, 1621-1894 George William Montague, states that Martha and all of her siblings were born in Henry County.
Yes, the book does contain errors. For example, it lists her husband as John Hill, instead of John Hitt and it appears their marriage date if off by a day.
2. The 1850 US Federal Census shows that the family was living in District 1, Henry County, Kentucky and the 1860 US Federal Census shows they were living in Subdivision 1, Henry County, Kentucky, in the vicinity of the Jericho Post Office. Jericho is still in Henry County today.
The issue with obituaries and death certificates is that they are from secondhand sources and are not always accurate.
Based on the above, I am very confident that Martha Ann was born in Henry County, Kentucky.
Do you have a copy of her obituary? If so, is there anyway that you can share a copy with me? I would love to attach a copy to her in my family tree on ancestry.com. My email address is email@example.com.

I've transferred Charles to you. I have found that the office staff at Oak Hill are very helpful and willing to look up information for family members. I have taken photos of most of the headstones there; however, I could have missed a few. Also a few people do not have headstones. If you'd like to contact the Oak Hill office their number is (760) 745-1781 and you can find out if Louise is buried there.
Jennifer I am sorry it has been so long. I lost the link to this site and just found it again. It is so nice to meet you. My grandma talked about her sisters all of the time. I always wanted to meet them but never got to. I will send you an email with the information that I have.
