ADDENDUM: 4 Years have passed. Now, I've reached my 401-K Birthday. Will try not to spend it all in one place, but we are planning one more move to New England from New York. My husband's ancestors were Connecticut Yankees from various parts of the British Empire. While my maternal Welsh ancestors were mostly of the exploratory type (probably a hang-over from all that Viking DNA), his paternal Welsh ones were real blue bloods. Be that as it may, we are Cousins on our Morgan lines :0) Look under CT Morgan & Va/WVa Morgan Virtual Cemeteries. |
When you've passed your Medicare Birthday, it's hard to tell a "short" story, especially about yourself.
I was a Navy brat, so we were never from anywhere. We gave our grandparents address in Oklahoma as home. When asked what church we belonged to, it was Protestant chosen from Protestant, Catholic or Jewish. And our favorite hymn was the Navy one, "Eternal Father, Stong to Save".
My childhood goal was to have a cattle ranch with my Dad, but he stayed in the Service; and I went off to Oklahoma A&M to seek my own life partner, family & fortune.
My first husbands and I parted ways.
So, I perservered; moved East instead of West; and finally met that life partner with whom I've lived, loved and raised children & goats for over 35 years now.
When our parents died in 2007, after nearly 70 years together, my sister & I inherited boxes of the family memories. My goal with FindaGrave is to link & preserve their family lines, i.e. Junks & Buhrings for Dad and Gregorys & Morgans for Mom. Other surnames are In-Laws or Step-Families. Generally, we are related to all these folks by chance or by choice.
George Bernard Shaw was quoted to say, "If you can't get rid of the family skeleton, you may as well make it dance!" I have tried to do so in numerous cases :0)
Many thanks to all who have helped me...especially my husband who finds & shares obituaries with me when he reads the New York Times.
OBITUARY OF THE MONTH:
Every so often, an obituary moves my heart.
If you ever wonder why you need to remember those who have died, Roger Cohen wrote the sweetest Opinion in the New York Times, 8 April 2014. "From Death into Life" discusses his Uncle Bert Cohen who recently died at age 95. Mr.Cohen wrote, "Now he lives in me. The living are custodians of the souls of the dead, those stealthy migrants. Love bequeaths this responsibility."
OP-ED OF THE MONTH: This piece by Frank Bruni in the NY Times was inspired by Youth League Sports Coach Steve Bandura & his female baseball protegee' Mo'ne Davis. Printed 24 August 2014 it's titled "Black, White & Baseball". Bandura uses Jackie Robinson to inspire the kids. He takes them to the Brooklyn, NY Cemetery where Jackie Robinson is buried to read his tombstone: "A life is not important except in the impact it has on others."

The headstones are some of the most elegant in the cemetery. You are right, you get every kind of material , Limestone, Blue Rock, Marble, and just some plain field stones. You get raised letters, etched letters and letters no longer able to be read.
I took your request because it was an unknown and all indications were you would have to do some investigation just to be able to reach the cemetery. All true, but doable.
Seems to be a lot of Disney/Shipley relations in the cemetery. I would say a good quarter to half of the 400+ graves are in those two families. How are you related to the Shipleys?
Happy I could help, it was a beautiful day and the cemetery is kept up very well.

You are very welcome and if you would like me to transfer Wilhemina to you I will be happy to do so. Also take a look at all the Shipley's in the Friendship Cemetery, I added about 30 more to the database. You may find some more people you are looking for. The cemetery is so secluded and the road is heavily restricted because it is access to the end of the runway at BWI airport. Beautiful cemetery for being so hidden.

I like to add close ups when I remember when there is a joint marker. These bronze ones at Floral Haven can be so wide that they are barely readable on the website!
I'm glad you share my sentiments regarding those who have passed. I saved the quotes you posted on YOUR profile page to my cemetery file because I found them very moving, as well.

Sorry, I jumped the gun on this one. I found my Mary E Shick's death certificate and she is not the same as yours. Fascinating how many people have the same names and similar birthdates, isn't it?
|Sonia Young Francisco||Mary Etta Shick Burgett Memorial #120309812|
In researching the Shick family, I came across the daughter of Reuben M Shick(Find A Grave Memorial #61258138) in the 1880 US Census named Mary E Shick. Her birth is abt 1870, born in PA. I am not sure what documentation you have for your Mary Shick, but might these be the same people? If so, I would like to link them up. My Mary Shick does not yet have a memorial.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I have corrected the memorial.
You are welcome. I happened upon his grave site when I was fulfilling a photo request for Dennis Sorden who is buried in the same lot. I could not find Dennis' marker so I checked with the office and they were kind enough to give me the names of others in the same lot. They also said that Olen and his wife's grave site were unmarked. I wrote the names down and it was my error in the spelling of his first name. If you would like a transfer of their memorial pages, let me know. Red

I am so blessed to be able to help people. Are you also related to the other Clifford West at Milton Freewater?
|Carl Nollen||Vannest in Oskaloosa IA|
I took the photos today. They would be better if there was sun today. We had 6" snow a week ago which melted last Thurs & Fri. We have not had the winter you have had out east. Thanks for your message. Carl
