Hi Marie,

Just a note about that photo. I searched Hillside Cemetery that day and could not find Nellie's grave. But I did happen upon it accidentally the same day in Pilgrim's Rest Cemetery in Norwalk, WI, which is also in Monroe County. Find A Grave has it listed in the wrong location.

RE: George Witting Grave Photo
I have been to Woodland only 3 times but I have never seen a section with lines of military markers. Such a section might no longer exist.

RE: George Witting Grave Photo
Just about everything regarding Woodland Cemetery is confusing. There's a site where some info is given about its history and severe desecration. It's at

The article mentions that many civil war vets were destroyed. It's possible that there had been a civil war marker there but was destroyed and replaced by the one that is in the photo. It is also possible that the military marker is broken and underneath all the overgrowth in the photo. There are many instances where there is both a regular marker and a military marker on the same plot.

I cropped off the top of the photo because it is along the sidewalk and there were bags of garbage in the gutter and I wanted them out of the photo.

If the grave was in Section 11, the location grave 25, row 1 would correspond generally to where the 3 graves are. Row 1 would be the first row in from the sidewalk and it is at least 25 graves over from the right edge of that part of the cemetery. Unfortunately, many graves are given with just row and number and no section.

Could you send me a scan of that photo so I can see if I can place it somewhere? I would especially be interested if the background showed a sidewalk, fence and housing. If so that could put it at the plot I took these photos. The fencing is all gone for about 50 yards on that side of the street, so depending on the date of the photo, a fence in the background would not rule out that this is the spot where that photo was taken.

RE: John and Barbara (Sipp) Hunkele
Just so you know, I replaced the photo of the main headstone with a better shot.

RE: John and Barbara (Sipp) Hunkele
You're very welcome again. I sent a message to the person who made the memorial to correct the spelling of the last name from HUNKLE to HUNKELE.

There is another memorial for Capt. John Hunkele at Find A Grave Memorial# 12711286.
