Bio and Links
Bio Photo I am interested in my own family's genealogy and in preserving the memories of deceased family members. My parents, grandparents, and of course my great-grandparents are all deceased. One of my great-grandfathers, Barnaby Du Charme, buried in St. Gabriel Cemetery, Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, was a veteran of the Civil War.

As a Catholic, I prayerfully remember my deceased loved ones and all the souls of the faithful departed, particularly during the month of November, which is the "month of the holy souls". The Catholic Faith teaches that when a person dies, if he or she dies in a state of grace, meaning they did not have any unconfessed mortal sins, they will go either directly to heaven, or more likely, their soul will go through a purification, not of sin, but of the temporal punishment due to sin. This purification is referred to as Purgatory and is a defined dogma of the Catholic Faith. Thus the Church encourages the faithful to pray for the departed souls so that they might be purified and enjoy the beatific vision, that is, the unspeakable of joy of the complete presence of God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit, together with the angels and the saints, in Heaven.

Pray to God daily for the grace to know Him, to know the Truth, who is Incarnate in the Son, Jesus Christ, and to come to the fullness of the Truth in the Catholic Faith.

For all the Holy Souls we pray:

Eternal rest grant unto them O Lord.
And let perpetual light shine upon them.
May they rest in peace. Amen.

In Latin:

Requiem aeternam dona eis Domine:
et lux perpetua tua luceat eis.
Requiescant in pace. Amen.

Hello -

You may want to change the wording in the prayer you left for Frances Heavey. She was a woman and you refer to her as "him" in the prayer. Thanks.

Gabriel, I am so sorry, the numbers I just posted in the previous post (which I don't know if I can edit!) and I thought were the coordinates, are just the time stamp when I took the picture.

Gabriel, I am not from the area, but was only "driving by" when I took the pictures, so I am going on memory here. I seem to remember when parking in the church parking lot, that the grave was to the left in the cemetery, and I think it may have been near the rectory garage, as you said (I am not sure on the direction - NSEW) . I remember cleaning off the grave considerably to be able to read it, as it was covered in yellow lichen. I have the coordinates on the photo that I took if those can help you find it in the cemetery: 14.54.53. I haven't ever tried to find something with the coordinates, but I know that they will pinpoint the area the photo was taken.

I went to Doylestown this weekend and took a photo of his headstone! His family did a nice job!

Barnaby Du Charme
Unfortunately, your ancestor was born at a time of flux for the Catholics of Prairie du Chien. There was no resident priest and, around 1836, Father Samuel Mazzuchelli of the Diocese of Dubuque visited the town a couple of times and performed the sacraments. Unfortunately, his records were destroyed, insofar as I know. Mazzuchelli and his bishop, Mathias Loras, were instrumental in the building of the stone church, St. Gabriel Archangel. Normally, the names of the parents were written by the priest on the baptismal record but, in the case of Barnaby DuCharme, the record probably does not exist. The names of the parents were also often on marriage and death and burial records. But not always. Perhaps, if you check the marriage and burial records of Barnaby at the La Crosse Diocese, you can find out something. That is where all the old records of St. Gabes are now.

Hi
Don't know if you can help me, but my GGGGG Grandmother I believe is buried at St Gabriel. Her funeral was held in the church then the OB leads you to believe she was buried in the cemetery. She passed on 5 Feb 1882. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Don
