Bio and Links
Bio Photo I visited Find-A-Grave for years filling in blanks on my family tree. After retirement I decided to become a contributor too. I wanted to "pay it forward" by helping others find their relatives buried here in central Oklahoma. (2000)

(2014) I have now turned my attention to Indiana. I am working with a cousin to add memorials and photographs to the thousands of old cemeteries there. He does the leg work and I do the desk work.
I wish more people (other than F/G volunteers) understood the importance of what volunteers are doing here. We are preserving history, allowing family from all over the country to 'see' their loved ones' burial locations, and providing a valuable genealogical resource. Lately I have heard more and more stories of cemeteries not allowing volunteers to shoot photographs or charging $5 to look up the location of just one burial. I don't know if it's the influx of volunteers who are too eager to do their job or just the lack of understanding for what we do.
I wish they understood that we ARE honoring and respecting the dead by making sure they are remembered!
-------------------
I look at Find-a-Grave as my new "job" because I get to work with people who have a common purpose and love of what they are doing. The 99% of helpful, friendly, and cooperative people I find here more than out weigh the four people I have run into who are vicious and hateful. You will run into them, but know that they are the minority here and don't let them discourage you.

If anyone has complaints about my memorials try asking nicely first without the venom - you catch more flies with honey than you do vinegar - as Mama used to say.

A FEW TIPS FOR TAKING GOOD TOMBSTONE PICTURES:
1. Take a photo of the entire tombstone first, then get a close-up of the name if it is hard to read on the whole view. Try to fill the frame with the stone and not the surrounding countryside, homes, cars, etc.
2. Look for your reflection or shadow in the tombstone BEFORE you take the picture! Stand to the side to prevent reflection.
3. Squat in order to get on the same level as the tombstone - don't stand and shoot down at a sharp angle.
4. If the stone is vertical, take the picture vertically - it will display on the memorial much larger than horizontally. PLEASE DO NOT put the picture up sideways!!! This is very disrespectful!! If you don't know how to turn it, ask me and I will try to help.

We are trying to preserve history so we want the very best pictures possible - it may be all that survives!

** My photos may be used for any nonprofit purpose - ONLY IF - you give credit by listing your source so others can find it. Noting the source INCLUDES the photographer's name, and the Find-a-Grave memorial number or website.**

RE: Backes Families in OK.
Just want to THANK YOU so much for adding photos of the headstones of my Great Grandmother's sister, Mary Elizabeth Backes' family in Watonga, OK. They moved there from MN. @ 1900. Are you related to them, too?!

Hello CatheaC,

Thank you very much for the updates completed.

When I research my own family tree I cannot pass by the obituaries of others.

I am not related to this family, but I see others are researching this linage.

Thank you for being a Find A Grave member and for posting this memorial.

Thanks for the transfer
Thanks for the Damon Bale transfer. Some Find A Grave Contributors wouldn't do it, just because they don't have to.
