PLEASE use the Edit tab and Suggest a Correction link to add/correct information.
PLEASE use the Edit tab and Suggest a Correction to request a transfer. If you let me know the relationship, I will consider an out of guidelines transfer. Please spare me the "I am the family genealogist" and the "I have tons of information to add" stories. I will check your existing memorials to see how many tons have been added. By the way, I do check on the memorials I've transferred.
Requests for bulk transfers will be summarily ignored. If you can't take the time to let me know which memorials and your relationship, I won't take the time to figure it out.
I WILL NOT link to just "burial unknown". This IS a grave registration site.
If I do not maintain the memorial, but add a picture, PLEASE check the photo caption for the inscription.
My love of old cemeteries is genetic from my dad. I try to take pictures of the fallen/damaged markers first as they might end up "behind the shed" or "over the wall" by the next time I get there.
Sources for additional memorial information include: Suggest A Correction, NEHGS, Fold3.com, Ancestry.com, NARA, other on-line sources, personal library, obituaries, newspaper items, etc.

 | Another note on Albert Thomas Bradford G. Thomas m. (2) 16 Oct 1841 in Conway, as her first husband, Fidelia Bradford (1816–?) of Conway, d/o Edward Gray Bradford & Charlotte Boroughs of Conway. Fidelia was Albert's mother. After Bradford Thomas died, Fidelia m. (2) 9 Jan 1855 in Wmsb., as his second wife, Calvin M. Rice (1806–?) of Conway, son of Benjamin Rice. I suspect neither of them died in Williamsburg; I've found no death records or stones for them here. | | | Eric Weber
 | Martha Nash, d. 5/10/1790 It follows from what I wrote in my preceding message that the Martha Nash (Find A Grave 86736569) who died in May 1790 aged 49, whose stone is in terrible shape and not even partly legible in the only photo I have of it (not posted), was not Thomas Nash's wife. I have tentatively identified her as the daughter Martha (apparently unmarried) whose birth to Thomas and Martha Nash was recorded in Hatfield on 21 Feb 1742, and who settled with them in Williamsburg according to the few poorly documented accounts I can find of the Nash family.
The 1794 death date given in memorial #82637167 for Martha (Smith) Nash is clearly incorrect, but the correct stone is pictured there. | | | Eric Weber
 | Mary/Martha Nash followup The name on the stone with the April 1778 date is unmistakably Martha, not Mary. I got down nose-to-nose with it and delicately cleaned off some of the lichen. Corbin definitely misread or misrecorded the name. The stone is close beside that of her husband Thomas Nash (1692/3 - 1773) and reads, "Mrs. Martha wife/of Mr. Thomas/Nash died April/__ (illegible date) 1778 in the/79th year of/her age." Of course it WOULD be today, for the first time in weeks, that the light is lousy for photography, but we need rain and I hope we'll get some. I'll rephotograph the cleaned-up stone and post another picture of it next time it's sunny.
Joseph and Canada (Wait) Smith had a daughter named Mary, but Hatfield marriage records show her marrying Dea. John Field of Sunderland in 1715 and her sister Martha, two years younger, marrying Thomas Nash in 1727. Thomas and Martha moved in 1766 with their grown sons John and Elisha to the part of Hatfield that soon afterward became Williamsburg, thanks to John's petition to the provincial assembly and tireless agitation in support of it. I have photocopies of Williamsburg's original vital records from 1765 through about 1920, but I can't find any record in them of either Thomas's or Martha's death. The recordkeeping was less complete in early times than it is now, of course. There might be church death records for them - I'll have to check. | | | Eric Weber
 | Thomas, Bartlett & Nash at OVHC I filed a problem report for your Albert L. Thomas request, and I hope you got a copy of it before the request and problem report were summarily deleted. I had asked that it be deleted because the stone definitely no longer exists, but I hadn't realized that you wouldn't be the one to delete it, or that you might never see the problem report before it WAS deleted. Sorry.
The Lucy/Lucretia Bartlet(t) problem is resolved.
I'm in fairly complete confusion about the Mary/Martha Nash issue, and am going back down to reread and perhaps rephotograph the stone(s) in question. I think it's possible that Corbin misrecorded the first name on the stone, but I don't want to assert anything until I'm much surer of myself. | | | Eric Weber
 | RE: Martha Smith Nash Thanks for catching my mistake - I'll correct it today. And thanks for taking the trouble to enter the hundreds of memorials for OVHC and so many thousands for other area cemeteries. You do a wonderful job, and it frees me to do what I do best and enjoy most: get good photos of the stones. I really appreciate it.
I've been after Williamsburg's Cemetery Commissioners to beat back the encroaching brush, Japanese knotweed and poison ivy at OVHC for years, even offering to do it myself as a volunteer. They refuse to accept any volunteer help, and when they finally hired someone to tackle the problem last fall, he was pretty ham-handed about it, knocking over several stones and completely overlooking the brush that still envelops others. No herbicide was applied and there's no long-term plan for maintenance, so the job will just have to be repeated over and over as the Commissioners get around to it, with more and more damaged and fallen stones the likely result. Very disheartening.
I'll be giving a Tuesday evening illustrated talk to the Historical Society, of which I'm vice president, in October about OVHC and some of its more interesting inhabitants' lives. Not so much about the stones themselves, because I'm no authority on gravestone art or local carvers, and no diatribe about the condition of the cemetery, because no one likes a rant. But I'm hoping that if more people get interested in visiting the cemetery to see the stones in person, maybe there'll be a groundswell of concern and support for more careful and thoughtful maintenance - maybe even (gasp!) some repairs. The talk will be on Oct. 8 at 7:30, I think.
I was scheduled to give a walking tour of OVHC last summer on Old Home Weekend, when lots of Williamsburg High graduates typically return from out of town for a day or two. But it was washed out by torrential rain, and thus my decision to try an indoor version of it. I'd be honored if you came, and if not, I'd enjoy meeting you some other time. I presume you must live somewhere in the area.

 | Mehitable Shaw Hi again,
I am sorry it is not her parents that are wrong. It is a daughter that is attached to Beriah Shaw 2nd wife that is incorrect.
Thanks, ArlineAdded by AVD159 on May 02, 2013 7:19 PM | | | | [View all messages...] |
