I was born in Grapeland, Houston County, Texas, parents, Walter Mayo Yates & Ora D. Clark Yates. I'm married, we have five grown children. I guess you would say I am the family genealogist for our family since 2004. Find A grave is a wonderful website. Family history is very important to me.
I hope I add something that will be of interest to others. Our family names include:Yates/Owens/
Denson/Clark/Parker/Chaffin/Williams/Steadman/Overstreet and many more.
For "PHOTOS" that I have added to my memorials, if you copy them, I would like to receive the CREDIT for them - Thanks, Martha Yates Vandver

Thanks for your reply. I am not as experienced as you are at this, however it has become important to me also because I had a son 3 years ago now and want to leave him with where he came from and all his ancestors that have fought to give him his freedoms. In more research and looking at your profile looks like we are related some how. William Washington Salter was my 1st cousin 5x removed. Not closely but nice to meet you. My personal info is firstname.lastname@example.org (706) 221-7754 and I would love to stay in touch with you. I have lived in Columbus, GA for the past 2 years and before that I lived all over Arizona, but was born and raised in Monroe County, AL. I am always back there now visiting my parents so if I can help you out with pictures or anything please don't hesitate to contact me.

Martha, was she the wife of Richard Duty, that had a settlement outside of Neches. Fort Duty. But he got killed by Indians.

I have a photo of the headstone of Mr. and Mrs. Hightower. The headstone does not have James date of death inscribed. Do you still want the photo?

I was seeking a relative when I came upon these numerous children; I often try to locate the parents, so sought out censuses, using Martha as a starting person and this is what I found:
In 1850, Albert Compton, 38, b.VA., was a dry goods merchant in Charleston Township, Coles Co., Illinois. Value of his property was $3,300. His wife was Catherine, 32, b.IN. They had 4 children: Martha J., 10, Rhoda M., 8, Nancy, 6, and Mary M., 4. All children were born in Illinois. Two unrelated children also lived with them, Rhoda Shreeves, 11, b.IN., and Albert Shreeves, 7, b.IN.
In 1860, Albert Compton, was still a dry goods merchant, was 47, property valued at $6,000 and cash $2,000. Catherine Compton, was 45. Same residence and the following children: Rhoda, now 17, who worked as a Domestic, Martha, 15, Mary, 13, Isadore, 10, and Rufus, 4, all b.Ill.
In 1870, Albert and Catherine lived at the same location with Albert still working as a dry goods merchant. Value of property (incl. inventory) $14,000 and cash $300. There were 4 children in the home: Mary, 21, Daisy, 17, Rufus, 14, and Albert G., 9, all b.Illinois.
In 1880, improvements had been made so that now Albert and Catherine lived on Columbus St., Charleston, Coles, Ill., in a new dwelling. He was 68 and a "retired merchant". Catherine was 63, Rufus, now 24, was an ass't. physician, and daughter, Allie, was 19. They also had a servant in the home, Millie, 17, unrelated.
As so many graves are no longer in existence I am not sure how much this information helps you, but I hope it does, to some extent. I was unable to find any of the mentioned children in Illinois cemeteries so can only guess that they either moved out of state or their graves were destroyed. Thank you for all the work you do for Find A Grave. With All Sincerity,
Kathie L. Webb Blair, Portland, OR

It has been a while since I took photo of his wife, Frances, gravestone however I'll be back in IOOF in about 3 weeks & have your request on my list to look for. At the time I was taking pix in '12-'13 the cemetery was not in good condition but new association has taken over and done a lot of work. I don't remember which section that was in, but will definitely look.
