Obituary:(Submitted by James A. Nethery - Madison, WI) The Montrose Press - 21 June 1901

John Nethery, who died last Friday was born near Paisley, Scotland, June 22, 1826. He was married in 1846 to Mary McLaren, who survives him. He came to the United States in 1847, with his wife following one year later and settled on a farm near Shullsburg, Wis., where they remained until 1877, and then moved to Joplin, Missouri. In 1885, they came to Colorado, finally locating at Cimarron, where they lived up to the time of his death, thirteen years. Mr. and Mrs. Neathery had fourteen children, five who are living, three sons and a daughter in Leadville, and a son in Missouri. The Leadville relatives arrived in Cimarron in time for the funeral. Mr. Nethery's illness lasted about eight months, and his death occurred at Riverside Hygienic Resort. The funeral took place at Cimarron Sunday afternoon. Rev. A.H. Law of the Baptist church at Montrose conducted the service. Deceased was a good husband and father and a ----- and kind neighbor and the little community of Cimarron will miss him.

Another Obituary article: (Submitted by James A. Nethery - Madison, Wi.) No date given or newspaper source:

Saturday morning last a message was received announcing the death of Uncle John Neathery at the Hartman Sanitarium a few miles above Montrose. Once more was the people of Cimarron called together to perform the last sad rites over the remains of one whom we all loved and respected. Mr. Neathery was one of the oldest inhabitants of Cimarron, coming here as bridge watchmen for the D. & R.G. in 1888. In the death of John Neathery, Cimarron has lost one of her best citizens. Loved by old and young, generous to a fault, always ready to extend a helping hand in time of distress, and a kind husband and loving father. The heartfelt sympathy of the community is extended to the breaved wife and children in this their hour of sorrow. C.C. The Montrose Press

Census Analysis:

1870 Census, Township of Shullsburg, LaFayette County, Wisconsin, enumerated June 9, 1870, Page 44, Shullsburg P O, dwelling 312-313, line 11.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Note the Census says he was born in Ireland. For 1860 and 1870. They were in the adjacent county in Illinois near Galena in 1850, so of course they are not listed in Wisconsin. However, for both 1860 and 1870 they are recorded in Shullsburg (1860 page 880 and 1870 page 493) next to each other. Actually the Moore families were also on the same pages except for father James Moore and Ellen. They are gone in 1870. The list is as follows for Nethery:

Many are in need of repair. The Fairplay Cemetery Board and other concerned citizens are currently working at restoring and repairing this historic cemetery. RE: Elizabeth Hird
I understand. Did you find another Elizabeth Hird there? Just wondering. I really appreciate you spending so much time looking for my relatives. It has been a mystery for year why no one can find them in the cemetery, as stated in the obituaries. Again. Thank you.

Elizabeth Hird
I received this message on the 1st of September and wondered if you were able to find the grave of Elizabeth Hird and other members of our family. "Find A Grave contributor, flaggtx has fulfilled your photo request for Elizabeth Hird. To see the new photo(s), visit Elizabeth Hird's online memorial by clicking on the link below:" The link didn't have her photo, so I thought I'd just write and see if it was a mistake. Thank you so much for your time.
