I'm retired from the Department of Veterans Affairs and living in Douglasville, GA -- in the same county where my ancestors were pioneer settlers ca. 1830. |
Since 2006 I have served as Chairman of the Douglas County Cemetery Preservation Commission. We have about 50-60 old, abandoned cemeteries in the county -- some of them very well concealed back in the woods. Each one is now cleaned at least once a year by the cemetery commission and a crew of county jail inmate trustees. I'm in the perfect job to be taking photographs of tombstones and providing information about them.

Because they were officially approved, it won't allow me to delete them. But I have contacted Find A Grave and requested that they be removed. I'm not sure how long that will take, but the request has been submitted.
At the time I posted the photos, there was nothing designating it as a separate cemetery.

Preserving the cemeteries is so important. Your work sounds pretty involved coordinating all. Keep up the good work.

Sandy, we found another Horry County Cemetery yesterday. It was in the middle of a privately owned farm. Adam Emrick, Sr. Planner, Horry County Board of Architectural Review has been looking for this cemetery for 2 years. With the help of another contributor in Summerville who does aerial photography searching for lost cemeteries, we were able to speak to the owner and go to the location to document. What was lost is now found.

I noticed your inquire on the location of Old Dorman Cemetery, and it looked as if you had not received a answer. If you do a cemetery look up for "Old Dorman Cemetery, Horry County, SC." the cemetery page has a map on it showing the location just north of Conway, SC.
Thank you for leaving a message for our sweet Skippy.

You are welcome, glad I could help.
Luckily he was in one of the smaller sections & was about 6-7 rows in.

Thank you for the info that you provided.
A retired school teacher (named Carolyn)from Heard County has told me about all the good work that you and the preservation committee has done in your county. I wish Troup County had a group that cared.
Thanks for your contribution to clean the cemeteries.
