RE: Cemeteries at Mountain Grove
Hi Lorraine,

I asked Mark, one of the Find A Grave admins which form of name he would prefer to see as the name for the cemeteries, the official ones or the ones on the signs, and he indicated the signs are the way to go, and the official ones as AKAs for search purposes.

I'll put in some name change requests on the Cemetery Corrections forum.

RE: Cemeteries at Mountain Grove
Thanks for your reply Lorraine, I got an e-mail notice from Find A Grave that you had replied, but before I could check it Find A Grave (and I gather Ancestry as well) were knocked of the air by a hacker attack, so I didn't get to actually read your message until now.

This is a bit of a conundrum to know what would be the best way to handle this in Find A Grave terms. From what you say are these cemeteries now actually administered as a single cemetery by South Frontenac? If that is the case I wonder if they should be merged in Find A Grave. Or do any of them still have an independent existence, i.e. does St. John's still have any connection to the Anglican church? If they do still have a separate existence do we go with the sign or the official name? Personally I would tend to go with the sign (whatever the official name might be) since that is what people actually visiting the cemetery will see.

Thanks for your kind words about my site. I love walking around in cemeteries and am extremely thankful that the Cataraqui Cemeteries are close enough to the Via station that a non-driver like myself can easily walk to them from the station.

I am hoping that by the end of this year I will have finished photographing all of the legible stones in Cataraqui United Church Cemetery, although it will take far longer than that to get the photographs catalogued and loaded on various sites. I had a chance to meet with the church board member that handles cemetery matters on my last visit last fall.

Cemeteries at Mountain Grove
Hello, I see you have added photographs of the cemetery signs for Olden Cemetery and for St. John's Anglican Cemetery. As a non-driver I have never had a chance to get to any of the three cemeteries that are located on the same corner. My information on these cemeteries has mostly come from Tom Fox, who has family members buried in all three of them.

My understanding from him is that Mountain Grove Cemetery, located on the south-east corner is a distinct cemetery from Olden Cemetery, located on the north-west corner. He says that Mountain Grove Cemetery is still active, but Olden Cemetery no longer has any plots to sell and is largely inactive, although there is still the occasional burial for members of families that already own plots there that still have space.

When I created a record for Olden Cemetery I had not seen a picture of the current sign, so I used the name used for that cemetery by the OGS in their transcription of "Mountain Grove (Olden) Cemetery" Given what the sign now says I would want to have "Mountain Grove (Olden) Cemetery" changed to "Olden Cemetery". However, I see you have added the photograph for Olden Cemetery to the record for Mountain Grove Cemetery and not to Mountain Grove (Olden) Cemetery, and someone, possibly your or possibly someone else, has added Olden Cemetery as a synonym for Mountain Grove Cemetery.

It is possible that you have local knowledge of the cemeteries that I do not. Do you have reason to believe that Mountain Grove Cemetery and Olden Cemetery kitty-corners from each other are the same? Tom was quite certain that they were not the same, and his family knowledge of these cemeteries is quite extensive. The OGS also seems to consider them to be separate cemeteries, as their transcription (one I unfortunately do not have) lists them separately and is called "Mountain Grove (two cemeteries) and St. John's Anglican, 40 pp."

I would like to discuss this with you to see if we can reach an agreement on how to handle this that we can present in the Cemetery Corrections forum.

thanks!

cont'd Van Leuven note
Hi again: Question: It appears that you are working on the Van Leuven lines - do you want transfers of them, which I would be happy to do, as you may request? I will await your reply. Have a good day.

Hi.

I see you have added a lot of VanLeuvens.

Are you a VanLeuven descendant? If so, we are cousins.
