I've always loved hunting thru graveyards, even as a child I could be found exploring and reading the stones. I participate in many memorial services as a "Black Rose" (mourner) with the TN Society Order of Confederate Rose. Tho' I don't know but few of the names I list I believe everyone should be remembered, their lives are full of stories we'll never know, most leaving just a rock to speak their existence. I live in middle Tennessee, we have many small family graveyards here. As a genealogist I have found clues and info on FAG I've not found elsewhere. FAG has many errors and I'm more than willing to correct any that I may have on my memorials. Also I am NOT into the numbers games I believe information belongs to us all, ask NICELY I will transfer to you. |

Can you tell me if there are unmarked graves in the Colonel Smith Cem. on Hollemons Bend Rd in Granville, and if the cem can be accessed? Col. Smith was my 4th great Grandfather

This it quite an interesting discovery. Our Camp published a book on the history of the Yancey Independents. We knew that Lt. Weeks died in Huntersville, but we knew nothing of Pvt. Roderick Manning McRaney. We had a Pvt. Daniel James "McCranie" and a Pvt. George W. "McCranie," who may have been his brothers.
It's sinful that these men don't have stones and our government is doing the best it can to discourage folks like you from placing them. I'll ask around and see if I can't find any of his descendants.
We've sold out of hard copies of the book, but I could e-mail you a pdf version at no cost if you're interested.

I'm trying to follow your directions on Googlemaps.com but it appears Rock Springs splits 2 or 3 times. Can you take a look at the map and give me some idea which split? If you use google maps to place it, you can right click on the spot and it'll bring up a menu - one of the choices is 'what's here?'. Click on that & it'll give you GPS coordinates for the spot your cursor is on. That would be such a terrific help in finding this little cemetery, if you could. Thanks so much.

OK, I yield, But in some of my family cemeteries, this is the information I received. I thank you for your information and will not just to such conclusions in the future. Love your picture, by the way.

Thanks for looking. I have been in some of the southern cemeteries, and have found out the the stones that our not with the regular headstones (those off to one side) are markers for the slaves in the family. You may already be aware of this fact. Hers maybe unreadable or destroyed at this time. It is wonderful to have people like you out there helping us. Thanks so much for your reply.

When I was in High School at Cass High we would take trips to the Cassville cemetery. I remember telling people that I was related to a lot of people there. I am trying to make a trip (when it's a little cooler) to Bartow County to visit family and to look at Cassville, White, Woffords Cross Roads and Oak Hill cemeteries. Most of my family is in those four.
