RE: Sgt Maj John Patrick McDonagh, Memorial # 127393678
Thanks Robbie...

The marker picture was claimed this week and the photo was just placed there. Old Lonesome Gravedigger is no longer Find A Grave. I tried to contact them but it won't let me. Thanks for your suggestion to contact anyway. I will just keep his memorial until someone comes along that is either in his family or just someone who knew him.

No need to apologize for not getting back... Life takes us up one hill and down another all the time.

Best to you and all you do...

RE: Sgt Maj John Patrick McDonagh, Memorial # 127393678
Hello Robbie...

I did send you a message prior to transfer... I guess it didn't go through before. I transferred the memorial to you since you lived in the area and were more familiar with Beaufort National Cemetery. I thought also since you claimed the picture request that I put out for the Sgt. Maj, you wouldn't mind having his memorial. I'm sorry if I was wrong about that. Someone transferred him to me and I didn't even know him. If you would like to keep up with his memorial... please let me know. I will transfer him back to you if you like.

Many Thanks,
Ree

Thanks
Thank you very much for taking the time to take the photo of Donald Godwin's grave. He was my uncle and I have been too far away to visit. I really appreciate it.

RE: John Norris at Beaufort National
Robbie,

I received this message today regarding John Norris and there is now a photo of the tree and someone's stone that is nearby.

"As previous stated, the headstone no longer is in place. the headstone next to the big Live Oak tree is numbered 671. So #672 would be closer to the tree.

I know it takes awhile to get stones replaced, but since you were so kind to offer to go back once that is done, I wanted you to know that the photo is not really of the stone.

Thanks so much!

Thank you so much for checking for John's stone and I do so appreciate that you took all this time to find out what happened and to learn that he is going to get a replacement marker. That's wonderful news.

In appreciation of John and you,

Private Theodore Barnes, Co. I, 169th N.Y.
Hi Robbie,

Priv. Theodore Barnes, Co. I, 169th N.Y., is a mystery.

First of all, Theodore Barnes had an alias, "James Harp," according to his pension file index card.

Secondly, the regimental register lists him as having deserted:

BARNES, THEODORE. Age, 18 years. Enlisted, January 13, 1864, at Potsdam, to serve three years; mustered in as private, Co. I, January 18, 1864; deserted, August 16, 1864.

Third, he is listed by the SUVCW site as having been discharged or died, not deserted:

http://www.suvcwdb.org/home/records.php?action=view&id=174677

Note that the SUVCW lists the name of the grave at Beaufort as that of Theodore Barnes.

Since he received a pension, I doubt he deserted. But why would a soldier who was serving in Virginia in August 1864 be buried at Beaufort?

Cheers,

- Steve Wiezbicki
