Bio and Links
Bio Photo I'm retired from the Department of Veterans Affairs and living in Douglasville, GA -- in the same county where my ancestors were pioneer settlers ca. 1830.

Since 2006 I have served as Chairman of the Douglas County Cemetery Preservation Commission. We have about 50-60 old, abandoned cemeteries in the county -- some of them very well concealed back in the woods. Each one is now cleaned at least once a year by the cemetery commission and a crew of county jail inmate trustees. I'm in the perfect job to be taking photographs of tombstones and providing information about them.

Find A Grave Memorial #10678541. This is my husband's great grandfather. We would like to apply for a grave marker for him from the NARA. We visited the cemetery but we did not find his grave. I see that he is buried next to his wife Narcissa Allen and she does have a headstone. I was wondering if you would be able to help us locate his grave so that it could be installed.

Thank you for the information on the tombstones in this cemetery. Perhaps you can contact findagrave and have this information put on the cemetery description page to avoid future confusion. Also, it would be helpful if the cemetery name was changed on findagrave to match the name on the sign. I have deleted the 6th memorial as you requested. Thank you for letting me know. Linda

RE: McLartys
Sorry it has taken me so long to reply, I have bee traveling from AZ to my summer stay in WA with my my dau. The summer temps. in AZ are just too hot in July and August.

Okay, now to your message. My g. g. grandfather, Edwin Maxwell was married to Margaret McLarty. They livedin "Dark Corners", GA. The best I can guess is that is now Douglasville. My g. grandfather William Maxwell, and Franes Morse Maxwell lived in Villa Rica, GA.

Pat Deneen of Austell is a ccousin. Her g. grandmother was a sister to my Frances Morse. She also has McLarty ties. I really like finding "cousins" online, I think it is such fun. I know there is a Mawell in Powder Spgs. but he doesn't want to correspond. I know that I am also related to the Baggets in your area.

I hope we can continue to correspond, Lottie Vandergaw. P.S. I am the third Lottie, Lottie Maxwell, Lottie Robertson and Me.

That is wonderful news. So happy it was successful. My grandpa died in his 30s of PKD and it must have died out with him. None of his children had it or anyone else in the family since.

Hi Sandy..
No, I am not related to your family. I cant remember how I came across your dad and granddad's memorials but I read they had died of polycystic kidney disease. My grandpa and a number of other ancestors died from that same disease so that caught my attention and I left them flowers. Best wishes to you and yours

Sandy, Do you know if there is any relationship to our Hilleys? One in particular I'm interested in is Molly White Hilley (#27959718), she is buried in Wise Chapel Cemetery where my LeSueurs are buried. Then there also Hilleys buried in Heflin Cemetery. Thanks!

Thanks for taking the time to look for the grave. I should have taken more time to see if there were duplicate entries in find a grave also.

RE: Basket Creek Cemetery
Because they were officially approved, it won't allow me to delete them. But I have contacted Find A Grave and requested that they be removed. I'm not sure how long that will take, but the request has been submitted.
At the time I posted the photos, there was nothing designating it as a separate cemetery.

Saving a cemetery
Preserving the cemeteries is so important. Your work sounds pretty involved coordinating all. Keep up the good work.

Horry County Cemetery documented
Sandy, we found another Horry County Cemetery yesterday. It was in the middle of a privately owned farm. Adam Emrick, Sr. Planner, Horry County Board of Architectural Review has been looking for this cemetery for 2 years. With the help of another contributor in Summerville who does aerial photography searching for lost cemeteries, we were able to speak to the owner and go to the location to document. What was lost is now found.
