Hi Peter.
You're not wrong- for some reason Joel became a Christian and raised his family as Christian. In fact, no mention was ever made of their Jewish origins and the first we knew about it was when my Aunt found Joel and Sophia's marriage certificate.
I have photographs (via the Commonwealth war Graves photographic project) of Joel jnr and Charles's graves in France and Turkey and whilst Joel has a Star of David on his grave, Charles has a cross.
Joel snr was a very successful businessman but he traded under the name Joseph Daniels. Family legend says this is because he was wary of having a name which could be identified as either Jewish or "foreign". On the 1911 census, you will find him as Joseph Daniels.
It's all very interesting but I doubt we'll ever find the whole truth.

Hi Peter,
Wolf & Joel had 3 sisters:
Rachel (born 1859, London)
Hannah (born 1861, London. Married Henry Nykerk)
Caroline(born 1862, London).
Their parents were Solomon Marcus Dreeze (sic) who was born in london in 1833 and Leentje (later known as Leah) Doezebork.
Solomon Marcus's father was Marcus Dreezer who was born in London about 1800.
Hope this is of interest to you and when you've got time I'd be happy to share all the rest of the info we've discovered. Would you be happy for me to use the pictures you've put on Find A Grave to attach to my family tree?

Hello Peter and thanks for getting back to me so quickly.
I'm happy to say that both sides of the family are linked and we are therefore related!
Your Gt Uncle Joel's parents were Wolf and Betsy as you know. My Gt Uncle Charles'parents were Joel snr & Sophia (also known as Ruth Alice).
Joel snr and Wolf were brothers so your Gt Uncle Joel and my Gt Uncle charles were cousins. It's complicated by the fact that there are so many Joels and so many Charles in the family tree.
We have many relations here in the UK as well as in Holland, the US, Canada and Australia and now regularly e mail one another with any exciting or interesting family info or just to have a friendly chat. We've also created quite a big family tree. If you'd like to be a part of it, just let me know- I'm sure you'd find it interesting.
