Bio Photo Lawyer by day, mom by night .... I like puzzles and research and enjoying digging into family history. I also find cemeteries oddly fascinating for all of the possible untold stories they may hold.

RE: King's Mountain Coincidences
That's a wonderful story - thank you for sharing. I am transferring the memorial to you so you can add family information.

I know that you will honor the memorial as do I.

Susan:

The main campus library in Atlanta/Decatur has the university's archives and special collections, including all of the Candler family papers. Most of the Sledd-related stuff, however, is in the Candler School of Theology's library.

Interesting. I assume you know that the Candlers are a very Big Deal in Atlanta and Decatur because of the family connections to Coca-Cola and Emory University. The theology school at Emory was named for the family. A platted neighborhood in southeastern Atlanta (within the city limits), more or less due east from Downtown, is called Candler Park. The family left its mark here.

Sledd married into the Candler family, and he and his wife lived pretty modestly on a professor's salary. Their house from the 1920s and 1930s still exists in a Decatur neighborhood called "Great Lakes." It probably did not help that Dr. and Mrs. Sledd had NINE children! Eight of whom graduated from college Phi Beta Kappa, and two of the sons became university professors too. The oldest son and namesake died just weeks after graduating from Decatur High School, and never attended college. They are certainly an interesting branch of your family. I assume there are living grandchildren and great-grandchildren, but I believe all of the children are now deceased.

You mentioned that you are kin to Dr. Sledd's wife -- are you related to the Candlers, or a different branch of the family?

I would be happy to accept custody of the Andrew Sledd bio, and after making some tweaks to it, I would also be content to return custody to you if that's what you would prefer.

I presently live in Decatur, which is the Atlanta suburb contiguous to Atlanta's eastern boundary. I live about three quarters of a mile from the Decatur Cemetery, and was there two days ago to visit the Sledd family plot in order to take photos of the grave site and speak with the cemetery superintendent. The cemetery managers had no idea who Sledd was, nor of his significance in Georgia and Florida history, but quickly decided they would like to add him to their list of notables for their history brochure. My visit to the cemetery is what prompted me to check Findagrave.com, so that I could update the plot information, etc.

Would you please take a picture of Capt Curtright, sr. grave? I need to turn in a report to the UDC (United Daughters of the Confederacy) describing the grave. A picture would help. Thank you, Barbara Erdmann Hot Springs Chapter #80

RE: Great work!
I am a VA Ruff but have not found a factual connection to the Lexington/Rockbridge lines. I did work the lines as well as many other Ruff lines in VA and in the USA.

Carter Transfers
I am out of town teaching - won't be home till Sunday. Carter is one of direct lines - I will have to confirm they are not kin to me first. If not, then I will transfer.
