Bio and Links
Bio Photo I am a native of Louisville, KY and currently reside in East Texas. I have been doing family research for over 20 years. My maternal great grandfather anglicized his german surname Haubrich to Hambrick. I've always known that I had a great uncle 'Charlie' who changed his last name from Hambrick to Charles M. Hamburg and played professional baseball. I first found him on the Deadball Era web site by Frank Russo. I then found him on Find A Grave, also submitted by Mr. Russo. I seem to have a connection to baseball, as I am a distant relation to the Hillerich's of the Louisville Slugger fame. My ggrandmother, Mary (Hillerich) Vogel, was a first double cousin to J.F. "Fred" Hillerich, father of John A. "Bud" Hillerich, who made the first bat fashioned for an individual player, Pete "The Old Gladiator" Browning (as legend tells us), thus the birth of the "Louisville Slugger".
Other family surnames I'm researching are Jansen, Bosse, Mathies/Mathias/Mathews, Wenzel, Hess and Vogel. Many more too numerous to mention.

I'm enjoying working with this site and have added all of my family members that I've found so far. Most of my Ancestors are buried in St. Louis Cemetery, Calvary Cemetery, Resthaven Memorial Park and Cave Hill Cemetery, all in Louisville.

If anyone finds an error on any of my contributions, please don't hesitate to inform me and I will be happy to correct it. Families are for sharing, so feel free to use any photo I post in your own family genealogy, just please provide photo credit when uploading to genealogy websites. Please use the Suggest a Correction feature to make requests for modifications or transfers. Transfer requests should typically meet the Find A Grave guidelines, but I do make exceptions. I would rather a memorial be with 'family' than not. I do not do this for the 'numbers'. I do not transfer my own ancestors.

A genealogy tip for those posting obituaries. When listing an obituary and sourced to a particular newspaper, the obit should always be written exactly as printed. Any errors should be sited as a 'correction' at the end of the obituary.

A very special thank you to my very special Olin E. Hartley for sponsoring my parents memorials.

Thanks also to a special findagrave friend Diane Miller for sponsoring my maternal grandparents.

I appreciate all who leave tributes for my family members and please forgive me if I don't get a personal thank you out to all individuals. I am retired, but stay busy with family research and try to keep up with the chores that beckon me daily. I leave tributes when I can, but find it a task to keep up with my own family sometimes. Not enough hours in the day, but so thankful to have each day and the friends I have made on this site.

Claudia (Jansen) Hartley

Hillerich
Also, wanted to mention that John's son Joseph Bernhard Hillerich was married only a month to my great-grand-aunt Julia Jackson before tragically dying suddenly of an apparent epileptic seizure. Interesting enough, Julia re-married to John Henry Gabel and the passed the name Berhard to their first born son; Thomas Bernhard Gabel.

RE: John Adam Hillerich
Wow! This is so neat speaking to a Hillerich descendant! I grew up reading (and now writing)about the Civil War in this area which was basically a bloody guerrilla a.k.a. bushwhacker war which involved John Hillerich at the end of the war and post-war period. John apparently came very close to being killed a couple times in the Corn Creek/Yancy Mills area by the bushwhackers from stories I've read. John Hillerich is also meaningful to me because he was a neighbor to my Austrian ancestors on Corn creek; Johann Heinrich Gaebel and Sophia (Sehrader) Gabel. The children of these ancestors went to John's house when their mother was threatening suicide, (mentioned in articles of the period.)I mention this in my newest book of the southern Phelps Co. area as well as well other Hillerich items. I'll send you John's obit in a second. Regards, Garrett

John or Adam Hillerich
Hello, Well, I finally figured out the John & Adam Hillerich connection! They are the same fellow!! Adam was John's middle name, just to be sure, I requested the original military headstone application for Adam "Hillrich" and the death date is the same as John's, Dec. 27, 1893. So, I dropped the Findagrave profile for John, but added all the data over to Adam at bottom of his headstone picture when you click on it. It is Find A Grave mem# 10547712. I'm still curious though if he's kin to your Hillerichs' at Louisville, I'm quite sure of it. Garrett Gabel

Hillerich family
Hello again, I forgot to mention a major reason for my belief of the connection of John Hillerich of Phelps Co. Mo. to your Hillerichs' of Ky. In John's obit it states he resided in Louisville, Ky. before coming to Mo. in 1865. Coincidence?? I do not think so. Regards, Garrett Gabel

Hillerich family question
Hello, I added a Hillerich to Findagrave yesterday that I strongly feel is kin to your Ky. Hillerichs'. He was John A. Hillerich born in Heindgrind, Hesse Darmstadt, Empire of Germany. He named a son Joseph Bernhard/Bernhart Hillerich. This middle name I do not feel is a coincidence as I see one of your ancestors carried that name, i.e. Georg Bernhard Hillerich, Findagrave# 134765114. There is also an Adam Hillerich (likely a brother to John), buried in the same cemetery as John but his stone misspelled his last name as "Hillrich." I added his stone picture and if you click on it you can see my text stating this. Anyway, both of these Hillerichs' are buried in Rolla Cemetery of Phelps Co. Mo. I have interest in John Hillerich as he was a neighbor to my 2x great grandfather Johann Heinrich Gaebel, anglicized as John Henry Gabel a German whom I feel knew Hillerich while in Germany. Anyway, let me know your thoughts on this please. Thanks, Garrett Gabel

Hey Claudia, No I did not receive you 5/15 e-mail. Please do try again. Again, thank you so much for all your help. Because of you I have finally been able to match William Costin with his parents.
Have a great summer.

RE: Lorraine Edsell
Claudia..You're very welcome! No, I am not related at all (that I know of lol). I was trying to track down possible husbands of a very distant relative of mine (Cora Randall Thompson) from Louisville and that is how I arrived at your memorials. Your memorials are beautifully done and I just thought, while I was there, I'd pass that information along to you about the name. Since I was already sending a correction anyway, I looked up her SSDI record on familysearch for the full date of birth. Regards, Laura.
