Bio and Links
Bio Photo There are over 98,100 souls buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Richmond, Va. and 11,800 Confederate soldiers give or take a 1,000. The picture on the left Is the Confederate section Oakwood Cemetery taken in 1865. Please DO NOT WASH HEADSTONES!!! You can destroy them by using any kind of soap, bleach, Ajax. I came across a marble stone over 200 years old a few years ago. I went back and somebody had cleaned it. It was all pitted and the details were almost gone and the stone turned gray. Reason you do not clean them. There are chemicals in all modern cleaning materials. They will eat them away faster than the weather. SO LEAVE THEM ALONE!!! If you can't read them DO A RUBBING with paper and pencil. Post the headstone and the rubbing together. I also found out you can use thin aluminum foil using a soft brush and brush lightly over the letters. I'm starting to see where people are rewriting history to fit there agenda.//// F. A. Q. How do I get a relative's memorial transferred to me?
First, Determine if you really need the memorial transferred to you for management. Transferring of management should only be requested If you have extensive changes to make to a memorial. You can add photos and suggest corrections without having to request management. Simply having someone in your family tree is not grounds for a management transfer request. With hundreds of thousands of contributors, we have many overlapping family trees and it would be impossible for all contributors to manage their entire tree. Also, the goal is not to "own" every memorial of those to whom you are related. The ultimate goal should be to have meaningful, accurate memorials that honor those who have passed away, regardless of who created the memorial or who maintains it.

RE: Pvt. Thomas Carr
Know Thomas was born in 1834, don't know the date. I do know that his brother Robert Carr (born 1838) also served in the same Infantry. My dad is in the Tom Smith Camp of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. They have done a lot around the Suffolk Va area concerning Civil War soldiers. Not sure much about Robert either. I have done most of my research straight back father to father...now I am trying to branch off and find all there is to know about my family!

RE: Pvt. Thomas Carr
I completely understand!! Trying to keep my family all together! It's a great thing you are doing!! We need more people like you to preserve what our ancestors fought so hard for!! I put in a call to Oakwood after having little luck finding a mention of him in their records. They are taking a picture of what is there to email to me, I will gladly share it up here once I recieve it! I don't have much info on Thomas, but I do have quite a bit of info on his parents, if you would like.

Capt Robert J Boyd 16th GA Co K
Hey Mike

Where were the burials from Malvern Hill moved to? Do you have Capt Robert J Boyd listed at Oakwood? He was killed at Malvern Hill July 1, 1862. Thanks for any info on where he could be located.

W. McWoods Co. D 16th GA
Hi Mike

You sent me this name on a list of some of the 16th GA burials at Oakwood

"W. McWoods Co. D. Buried in Sec. D, Row 31, Grave 20. I could not find him in the muster rolls. He is on my list."

Just wondering if this could be W J Wood (William J Wood) who was killed at Chancellorsville May 3, 1863. I noticed that he is in the same section D as Starkey Hewitt who was also killed at Chancellorsville (although a couple of rows away.)

Best Regards
Laura

W.C. Stearns #132419523
Mike

Is it possible that this is W. C. Stephens? I can find no "W C Stearns" in the records of the 16th. IN fact there are no members with the last name Stearns at all. There is a Wiley C Stephens Co D 16th GA info as follows:

Enlisted July 1 1862. Mustered into service in the 16th Georgia Infantry Company D "Danielsville Guard" on Aug 10 1861.

Company D was organized in Madison County, GA and sent from Athens, GA to Richmond, VA under the command of Howell Cobb at "Camp Cobb"

Issued payment for commutation of rations Aug 5 1861 at Richmond, Va for $1.32 and signed by him with "X his mark"

Killed at the battle of "Malvern Hill" Glendale, Henrico County, Va on July 1, 1862.

Wife Samanthy M A C Stephens filed for arrearage pay on Oct 20, 1862. Document cites 6 months and one day pay due at $66.36 and pay for clothing of $38.00 for a total of $104.36. Signed by her "X her mark"

Uncle Herbert
After researching, my entry is legitimate. I looked up obits and there are two for the same name, one in Norfolk, one in Henrico County. Looks like two men of the same name died in Va. on the same day. My mistake was in adding the date of birth for your uncle to my memorial. I have deleted the date of birth from my entry.
Thanks for bringing this to my attention.
