My name is Debbie, I am married to Geo, and I have been searching ancestors for several years now. I have just started looking for the graves. Looking for Thrashers, Jackson, in Southeast Missouri, Grimes (Paducah, KY area, and Wood, Sheehan around Kankakee, IL. It's sad how so many family members just vanished years ago or so it seems.

RE: Charles Edward Mott
Thank you. I just discovered this site last week. I have been researching my family for several years & located information in Charle's obituary of Native American membership that have been searching for since 1989. I have also located family. cemeteries in several states that would have taken years to locate. I am very thankful for this information & the volunteers who have made this possible. I have registered to help other people in their search. Thank you again.

Charles Edward Mott
Hi Debbie.
Do you know any Motts from Kentucky? My mother's father was Deller Lee Mott. His father was Charles Edward Mott married to Harriett Burklow both from Crittenden Co, Ky. His oldest brother was Johnny Mott. My mother's mother was Katie Ellen Cordelia Stovall. They moved to SE, Mo &raised their children. I am hoping you may be able to help me connect Native American Ancestry.
With the names & state being in common, do think there may be a family connection?

Thank you for your help.

RE: Julia Grimes Thrasher
First, thanks for the transfer of Jack Vaughan's memorial. I really appreciate it.

Second, with regard to the Thrasher burial - I have 5 burials in Gravel Hill, they being Alpha, Clarence, George, John and Julia. Of these George and Julia are in unmarked graves. My suggestion would be to see if the other 3 are buried very close to each other if not next to each other. Then see if by chance there are unmarked graves next to them. You can tell by looking at the ground level - sunken means there is a burial. Another way would be to prod the ground. There is always the chance that you might find a gravestone that has sunken to below ground level and needs to be brought to surface for cleaning and/or reading. I haven't done this personally but have gotten lucky by others doing it and ending up finding some who were in my husband's family.

If you ever decide to prod I would suggest you get a 7 to 8-ft length rod and mark each foot so you know how far down you have went. Caskets are suppose to be buried 6 ft below surface and I take that as meaning the bottom of the casket or vault is 6 ft down which would put the top of the casket or vault at probably around 4 feet. Of course going back to 1917 (Julia's death year) she could have been buried in just a pine box which may have rotted through the years and you won't know unless you happen to hit it and break through it. I believe graves were usually 4 x 8 ft which allowed for the gravestone or footstone.

Gravel Hill Cemetery was originally the Gravel Hill Methodist Church Cemetery. The church was in front of the cemetery from what I've been told and after the membership disbanded the church burned. Some say the records were given to the United Methodist Church in Campbell but some years ago I talked to the then minister there and was told they had no records prior to the organization of that particular church. I don't know when the church was organized but if it was before 1917, I would think the records are there and perhaps the minister was not aware of it.
