I live in the Richmond, Virginia area and have been taking gravestone photos for over 3 years after I discovered what a great tool a digital camera is for that kind of work. I am trying to photograph as many of the cemetries as I can in the area. I also take my camera whenever I travel and and usually end up with photos from some distant cemeteries.|
I am the volunteer coordinator for the clean up of East End Cemetery in Richmond. Please contact me if you are interested in helping with the clean up effort.
The vast majority of the gravestone pictures that I've entered are of people I don't know. I've entered them to help others. If you'd like me to fix, add to, and/or delete any of your family members please email me and I'll make the change as quickly as possible. If you would like a copy of the original picture, let me know and I will be glad to email it to you.
If you would like me to transfer an entry to you, please let me know. I will be glad to do that.
Please request transfers and updates/corrections through the Suggest a Correction function so that I make sure I update the correct entry.
Note that much of the CSA related info for burials at Hollywood Cemetery was provided by Scott Hutchinson.

Thank you for entering William and his mother Margaret Marsh. I am wondering if Margaret's husband Charles William Marsh is also buried there. I don't want to enter the memorial if he is not there. His obit says "The funeral of Charles William Marsh, who died at his home near Mitchells on Monday in his eighty-third year, was held yesterday at two o'clock from the Presbyterian church, where the services were conducted by the Rev. Thomas W. Hooper pastor.. among the floral tributes with which his grave was covered was a silk Confederate flag, sent by the Culpeper Chapter of the Confederacy."

John, I went to Byrd Cemetery yesterday and it is in bad shape - grass about 2' tall covering up the markers - some markers sinking into the ground
Big dead tree falling down.
Don't know if I can do anything but would love to get this at least cleaned up.

I'm working with a lady to try and document alot of the smaller cemeteries and maybe get an historical marker put on them.
She asked me that - the library in Richmond also has it as Byrd - don't know where she found the Ed part.
Thank you so much -- I found some more obits that say the people were buried there so added them - but haven't found a complete list.
Thank you so much - Claire

Do you know if this cemetery was also referred to as Ed Byrd Cemetery?

John, I am adding photocopies of obituaries and death notices to my relatives, and people connected to my relatives. If you do not like the photocopies added as pictures, let me know and I will take them down. I can't switch the photo order. If you wouldn't mind switching the photo order to where your headstone photo is first, I'd appreciate it. Thank you for all you have done in your work on Find A Grave and locating my relatives.

re: I am curious. Do you know if those burials were moved or if they were always there and the cemetery was built around them? They are part of an small group of older burials in the cemetery. John
Thanks for transferring them.
Forest Lawn used to be the Carter's estate, Myrtle Grove, and the collection of graves there are all family. After civil war, remaining Carters migrated to Florida and the estate became Forest Lawn. Note the names of the roads within the cemetery - Carter La, Myrtle Grove, etc. Pretty cool that the old graves were somewhat preserved as the cemetery was built around them.

What a shame about the cemetery. It is so heart breaking to see such devastation to those who have left us behind. My cousin even told me a story about the closed up mausoleum there in the woods and I KNOW I took a photo of Miss Walker's marker, but I can't seem to find it. It is not with the others. I would be livid if the cemetery where my relatives are laid to rest was in such turmoil (which by the way, is Sunny Slope in West point, Virginia).
My dad was born there in Richmond and it just appalls me that the city, county or state would allow such a large cemetery to be overrun like that. Isn't Evergreen the one with Civil War Soldiers buried in it? I saw the photos at the website after I messaged you, of those who I do have, and those I didn't so, seeing the headstones in clear view was very nice!
I have to go through them again and make a list, which I did not do. Most of the markers I have photos for cannot be fully read but at least names can be given! And perhaps someone will somewhere in their stash, have a better photo. When I make my list, most likely tomorrow, I will email you what I can read and you can Memorialize them. If you would like me to add the photos, even if they are covered in tangles, let me know and I will add them with a little note as to why they are the way they are. I feel as though I should write the state about this cemetery even though I know it has already been done and they've not done anything.
God Bless you, and your group, for the work you are doing!
